Greetings from Mass, USA

Post by EmptyHand »

Hi RC people. Got back into RC this past year after about 40 years as my kids are about the age I was when I convinced my parents to buy me a used Hornet, which was my pride and joy.

This past year I got Grasshopper->Hornet->Frog->TT02-BR->XV-01. Obviously I have a soft spot for Tamiya.

RC10 was always unobtanium growing up; just never had that kind of money from lawn mowing allowance! But I remember very clearly when a few neighborhood kids showed up with those gold pans! By the time In could habe afforded one it was off to other things.

Anyway, I emailed Associated a few months ago out of the blue with a question about whether they’d ever do a Re-Re again and how special these cars are to us in the upper 40s and got a reply along the lines of “nothing currently planned”. Ha! They must have been laughing while typing that one!

So here I am with a 40th kit on order and can’t wait to dive into the RC10 rabbit hole head first. I’m going box art and going to run the wheels off this baby!

Look forward to chatting with you all. Going to get VERY busy here this year!

Welcome! For an RC10 runner with a 6 gear trans, the outdrive bearing mod seems like a must do to me. The original bearing setup with the outdrives seems like it gets sloppy/floppy and I worry about the outdrive metal gears then chewing up the nylon idler gears.

I do the mod just by adding the bearings and then one 2-56 screw (and washer if needed) to keep the left side bearing in place. On the right side the motor plate will keep the bearing from walking out.

My preference is for these outdrive bearings.

This is super helpful, thanks! I did plan for bearing upgrade but. the 2-56 screw and washer tip I would have never known. Appreciate you sharing this.

The outdrive bearing mod is actually adding bearings in a location that the 6 gear doesn't normally have bearings.

Instead of an outer support bearing, each 6 gear outdrive has interal bearings and an outer felt seal + seal retainer. Replacing the felt seal + retainer with a bearing provides the outdrive with better support for gear alignment under load.
