The King Of Kong: A Fistful Of Quarters

Post by THEYTOOKMYTHUMB »

There was some video game talk on the board today and it got me thinking about this documentary. It's about a guy trying to break the a record on the original Donkey Kong. It sounds stupid, but I thought it was awesome(inspirational even). It reminds me of vintage r/c a little bit because it spotlights a sub-culture that most people probably have no clue about. I think that most people that belong to this forum would enjoy it. Anyone that's seen it agree? If you haven't seen it and have some extra time you may want to check it out. :)

Links are usually a good thing. :P

I was never a big gamer, but I can see the allure to getting the top score in something. Tend to prefer the easier games that only require run/jump/fire. I'm a simple man with simple pleasures, that's why I like RC's. :D

Didnt see that one, but did recently see one about all the Old School Video Gamers/Champions/blahblahblah (hasbeens"), getting together for a "Reunion" or something. They looked just like you (well, at least I) would think they would when they grew up. At least one of them still had ALL the OLD Game Systems, hooked up to the TV sitting on a coffee table in his living room...SPREAD OUT ON THE FLOOR. Just gobs of wires EVERYWHERE. It was weird, sad, funny, inspiring, depressing, nostalgic, etc. And yes, Halgar, sometimes all at the same time.

While I kid about being old, I'm only in my mid 40's, however the "old school" games really are superior to most of the current crop of spoon fed play with themselves type games and toys. When I was in my teens, Asteroids, Donkey Kong, Pac Man, and the whole gang were just coming into existence. I remember Pong, and I played the Atari system, then the Commodore and C64's with their tape drives. Seems like so long ago, yet sadly it was only the 80's! LOL

Back when I was a kid, we used our imaginations to fuel our toys and fun. Today, unless toys play with themselves or promote gamers to play by themselves, no one seems happy. Here I am today and I'd still be happier with a fleet of Tonka trucks than all the video games in the world.  Why do you think I play with RC's? (besides being too lazy to push them around the sandbox by myself?   )

I thought there was some "female massager" called monster kong, but then remembered where I really saw the name kong before. It was just a plain old boring dog toy you can puzzle snacks into
We'll have to dod ome modern poezy; the kind which doesn't need to rhyme

I watched this a while ago and absolutely loved it, highly recommended. An average guy tries to break the record for Donkey Kong Jnr. and is unwittingly pulled into the world of 80s video game geekdome, its about him keeping his integrity and honesty amidst a bunch of spiteful gamers trying to hold onto their high scores.
