Quite awesome 8)
That is pretty cool.

About the closest I've been is cruising around with an eagle for about 20 minutes while flying my Easyglider. They just know where all the lift is at.

Re: anyone into planes?

I've got quite a few planes and am also learning to fly helicopters atm. The Electric Shock is what got me into rc planes about 5 years ago. I've had 3, what an awesome little plane. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/attachmentNew.php?attachmentid=944407 http://vimeo.com/7298260 http://vimeo.com/729792...

Re: belt conversion for chain driven optimas?

I just used some spare diffs (front oneway, rear geared) and belt from a Mid in my Optima. I didn't use an idler at all.

The drivetrain ended up extremely smooth and handled the power from a Novak SS5800 brushless system just fine.

Re: Optima 'HARDENED' final pinion gear.

It wouldn't surprise me if you could make it work. When I had a quick look before, I ran a 32 pitch pinion around an optima diff gear and the mesh is fine. Actually I just went and compared a new 19T 32P tamiya pinion against my old optima final drive pinion. Both have the same diameter. Obviously y...

I used one from an Ultima Pro gearbox when I put my Optima together.

I think you could just use a 19 tooth, 32 pitch pinion to suit a 5mm shaft. Like this

Re: Finally made the jump to LiPo

Probably the same reason we all don't go 2.4GHz, brushless, updated ESCs with LiPo cutoffs, LiPo batteries & corresponding LiPo-capable chargers all at once...cost! ;) I'm not quite there yet, and the only thing holding me back is the cost to make the transition. One LiPo battery may be cheap, ...

Re: 35v capacitor too large?

You could always run a separate higher amperage UBEC. Quite a common thing to do with planes and helis to eliminate brownouts/glitching/voltage fluctuations.

If you do, make sure you remove the red wire on the esc plug (that goes into the receiver).

Re: Schumacher Cat Vintage part

In standard form the SWB and XL Cats had a front spool (locked) diff with oneway bearings in the outdrives.

To be rid of oneways you need to add a front ball diff first.

Re: Finally made the jump to LiPo

I was excited to get my first lipo, a Reedy 5000mah pack with little use from an rctech member today, but for some reason I fail at the basics of lipo connections for charging. Can someone tell me what I'm not getting here in the picture below? I did the research or so I thought on Tower and this l...

Re: Schumacher Cat XLS runner

Yep that's me, no worries. :)

Haven't really done anything with my Cats in a while. I keep getting sidetracked with my RC planes. These days I find driving RC cars somewhat dull and boring, lacking in dimension, though my brushless lunchbox is good for a few giggles.

Re: Schumacher Cat XLS runner

Yep they work great.

Not much to worry about. Just make sure the wheel screws aren't to long. Maybe use a touch of screw lock on the wheel screws. You could always drill your rims to take 4 securing screws with todays brushless power.

Re: Project: "12v Nyghtmyre"

Why not go lipo? I looked at that site and their 10 cell sub-c packs are only rated at between 20 to 35 amps. So you would be looking at a max of about 350 watts. A lower rated 2 cell 20/30c 5000mah hardcase lipo (100amp continuous/150amp burst) will support 700+ watts. Over twice the power at less ...

Re: Topcat/Cougar Thrust Bearing

450 trex helis (and clones) use similar sized thrust bearings in their blade grips. They have a pressed cage that keeps the little balls captive.

I haven't tried them yet, but have a feeling they may come close to fitting the diffs of our old schueys.
