You should be able to look through the brush slot and get an idea of the comm condition. You can use a fiberglass pen through the slot and turn the motor to remove carbon buildup. Those brushes are shot. There probably isn't any spring tension on them.

Not that it's that bad, but it verifies any time that I change data connection. Wifi at home, different data boosters at work.

It's ancient. The brushes are probably shot and the comm has probably seen better days. And it was far from high-end to begin with. But with a restoration it's nice to have work, ya know? If you have a comm lathe, you can carefully knock the motor apart and rebuild it. I've saved a couple of them.
