Re: Discussion about possible aluminum transmission and part
Thanks Morten! Do you use HSS or carbide tooling when you turn aluminum? I find the carbide makes all the difference in surface finish, but it's $$$ up front... Did you make the gear as well? Are the forces at work in these gearboxes extreme enough a 6061 center would show more wear? I'm new to this...

Re: Discussion about possible aluminum transmission and part
For this, likely Delrin/Delrin AF on the plastic/composite ones, and 6061-T6 for the aluminum ones. If made with Delrin AF(Teflon impregnated), the bearings could possibly be eliminated from the trans for race applications. Don't hold me to that though, since I likely am overlooking something... EDI...

Re: Discussion about possible aluminum transmission and part
That is awesome, thanks a million!
Now I know the stock needs to be at least 1/2x2x4 for the set. Now to rough-model this puppy up!
Is it ok if I use two or three 1/8" dowel pins instead of a raised lip for locating the trans halves?

Re: Discussion about possible aluminum transmission and part
Ok, good, so I at least got that part correct. Anyone care to throw up some basic measurements of the height, length, and width for this sucker? I can't really pull that from the image because of the tilt distortion. I figure the more info I can get before I have anything in-hand, the better prepare...

Re: Discussion about possible aluminum transmission and part
Ok, thought it would be slip, but wasn't sure. I'm pulling down the cad models from mcmaster right now, I figure I might as well play with this a bit more and get a rough model rigged up while Johnboy and I work out the timing. Charlie, did you mean 1/4X5/8? I can't seem to find a standard bearing i...

Re: Discussion about possible aluminum transmission and part
Yeah, saw those, wasn't sure if that was the exact style everyone had in mind. Are the bearing bores press-fit, or slip-fit? I found this link to a bearing kit on TH in one of the other threads, so I now have a bit more of a sense of the scale of this, as well as bearing diameters. Pulling the first...

Re: explain your screen name
Take the engine from a 1978 Mercedes Benz 300D sedan, insert into a 1989 Dodge Ram 50 pickup, aka the D50 (technicaly a captive import of the Mitsubishi Mighty Max by Chrysler, but I digress), and you get a Dodgecedes-Benz 300D50.

Re: Discussion about possible aluminum transmission and part
No issues with the chip that's missing, I can just measure around it. Hmm, weekdays are pretty much out for me any time before 15:00, Fridays are open all day, but that doesn't fit with you, weekends are free most of the time. I'll be in Cali for the Google I/O developer conference from the 8th to t...

Re: Discussion about possible aluminum transmission and part
I worked back to the main link after I posted, cool beans. Not sure if I'd be the right person to ask him though, like I said, I'm kind of an unknown newb. Johnboy, whenever you're ready, I'm ready to start measuring things. Here's hoping that your trained squirrels are up to it! Not trying to rush ...

Re: Discussion about possible aluminum transmission and part
Oh hell, that looks easy! If anyone knows the guy who did the CAD work, and can get a sub-license to use his drawing files, I could likely use them to machine the parts, but that's a big "if". I've started on a dimensionless sketch based off of the front and back photo's he has up, and the...

Re: Discussion about possible aluminum transmission and part
Nothing gets molded, it's all milled or turned. I do need a known-good part that I can measure and use to create a solid model in CAD (I'm a loyal Autodesk fanboy, Inventor or AutoCad all the way!), but it's all non-destructive and the lender will get everything back same as they sent it, or cleaner...

Re: Discussion about possible aluminum transmission and part
Hello, mic check, is this thing on? First off, I'm a newb when it comes to pro-grade RC, closest thing I have is a chinsy scale model all-plastic monster truck that I got second hand, after it was ran through a puddle and the reciever boards voltage regulator popped, dumping batt voltage into the re...
