Without comparing, it kinda reminds me of the Tamyia TRF buggy series.

They do but it's the same one as JConcepts, which is not the same as the 6155 proline body.

I was about to order the Tamiya gear diff assembly (54471) and it suddenly occurred to me that the diff gear and side plate assembly is almost certainly too wide to fit the Austar/Injora case. That case is very narrow and closely hugs the gears. :(...

Thanks, @Coelacanth . Do the speed controllers you're referring to incorporate variable gearing? I think the only way you can reduce torque (without also reducing speed) is by changing the gearing. Let me know!

Yeah, they were sometimes used back in the day as a cheap alternative. I don't know how well they actually did but likely weren't amazing. I mean you're not going to be pulling any major weight with that kind of stuff but it works.
