I don't think any gear cover came with screws.

Never seen screws with any team associated gear cover in original packaging.

Correct, you start to lose the temper of the alloy above 450F. Also why I don't recommend people weld holes shut. powder coat can also get close to weakening the chassis.

The trick with aluminium is to cool it very slowly in order to keep its temper .

Well much like a Lexan body but using the original chassis as a buck and pulling a vacuum former Lexan mold over the top , you may even be able to do a pair , one outer and one inner so you could get a perfect outer and inner finish . There are a number of tutorials on YouTube on making a DIY vacuum...
