Those were rulon, Traxxas is the only one I can think of (I don't know the modern stuff well) that uses that type of material. It's more like automotive brake pad or clutch material. Rulon is nothing like asbestos.

If you can find a 32 pitch spur gear that will fit, I'd switch to it. The larger gears are much more forgiving on mesh.

Nice conversion, may I add a few suggestions? 1. It helps gear mesh you will want to connect the moto plate to the gearbox, the chassis will flex, and flex between motor and spur gear is NOT what you want 2. this is more my personal taste, I just don't really like full size batteries mounted sideway...
