Kyosho Turbo Inferno - New Rebuild #2

Post by Lavigna »

Here we go again! I couldn't resist picking up this beautiful Turbo Inferno. It is a built but never run buggy with some very rare vintage upgrades.

It is dusty and I am tearing it down for a complete rebuild. The only negative part is that the blue chassis has faded a little on the top side. I am not sure I would be able to match this shade of blue if I have it reanodized. Does anyone have an anodizer they would recommend for this?

The new OS EX engine is a real score on this buggy. Although a RX would fit better from a timeline view, I am very happy to have another EX.

The buggy doesn't have the standard blue shock bodies that came with the Turbo Inferno. I'm not sure why but I will be adding these.

Full rebuild to come.

Update - Much of the buggy has been torn down and thoroughly cleaned. The blue anodizing on the chassis and even the small aluminum washers has faded. I am thinking of having a bunch of the aluminum parts on this buggy anodized the same color, as I don't think I have seen that done before to a Turbo Inferno. I think it could look very nice, but it's also easy to make it look like janky colored crap.

This buggy really does have nearly every upgrade from the period, and matches my other Turbo Inferno pretty close, with the big exception of the carbon chassis and plates. Whoever built this buggy originally did a great job, and was likely a seasoned racer. I tore it down to the diffs, but stopped short of taking them apart. All the screws were sealed with RTV, and the diffs were shimmed perfect. They were even labeled with the fluid weight. The diffs were made up of BSW1 & BSW2 gears, which is a big upgrade.

The fact that this buggy has the Paranoia rear aluminum wing mounts is pretty crazy. The only other pair I have seen happen to be on my other Turbo Inferno.

Many more pictures to come once parts come back from the anodizer.

Hi Lavigna, I hadn't been on this forum for a while and only just saw this thread. An amazing car! I hadn't heard of that wing mount before.
Looking forward to seeing more entries on this project. :!:
I think it will be tough matching the new anodized parts to the chassis.

Edit: just noticed the servo saver. Cool! Is that a custom part?

Thanks! I just posted a few new pictures of some small improvements to my #1 Turbo Inferno thread. It also has the Paranoia aluminum wing.

I believe the servo saver is made by AP Racing. If not, it could possibly be a Paranoia product. Like the wing mount, the quality and finish is superb, with a slightly rough texture. I have the Kyosho BSW86 upgraded steering kit on my #1 Turbo Inferno, and have a second NIP unit that was intended for this build. However I am happy to use this different setup on this build.

Update - I am very excited to have just received this BNIB Turbo Inferno. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to own a pristine example of this iconic buggy. This also changes my plans for this second Turbo Inferno build. Since I am not planning on building the NIB buggy now, I decided to steal the chassis and other blue plates from the box. These parts had faded on my current build, and I wasn't confident I would be able to match the factory color by having them re-anodized. Eventually I will track down new replacement parts and slip them back into my NIB kit.

You can see the extent of the chassis fading in the side by side photo.

Since my first Turbo Inferno build has all carbon chassis and plates, it is a very black and stealth looking buggy. I am excited to contrast that with this build and show off the beautiful factory blue of many of the parts.

Front and rear assemblies are nearly complete. NIP front and rear shocks are ready to be built up and installed.

I found some new 4mm blue aluminum flat head washers that match well with the rest of the blue. They are a nice touch over stock button head screws.

Slider status. Don't mind the front linkage.

I'm not using any stainless hardware on this build. I have added some flat heads with anodized blue aluminum decorative washers. I think it adds a nicer look.

It's a roller. I don't think the green wheels are a great fit with the blue on the buggy. I much prefer the blue wheels on my other Turbo Inferno. However it's nice to see the iconic coloring.

looking great!

my first dealings with kyosho was a nitro buggy that had the blue/green body. Never liked the colors together before that buggy though. Can't remember which buggy it was but it was in the mid to late 90's when it showed up in a magazine in the LHS and then to the shelf for someone who ordered it in. Know it was nitro 1/8 scale but for the life of me can't remember which buggy it was but since then have loved the blue/green color scheme.

I think it would be great to see the car with blue plastic parts. Possibly with green accents in a custom paint job and a green receiver protector (to break things up a bit) as a throw-back to the original?

I can recommend these https://marwanrc.com/ but make sure you are sure of which model of inferno you have so you can get the correct decals.

Marwan has the decals for the Turbo Inferno, and you can get the Inferno DX and Inferno classic 4WD decals from ebay or other sites depending on availability.
