Any PS2 Techs in here???

Post by MONSTER »

This is an old Fat Console that was put away a long time ago, for whatever reason. I decided to get it out and try my hand at repairing it.
First I tried it out. It played a few Discs, but not many. I adjusted and cleaned, then tested it out.
It played quite a few more, so I decided to do a bit more extensive cleaning. When I tested it this time, it did a bit of a flip-flop on me. It now plays ALL the Discs it didnt before, and NONE of the Discs it DID before.
I have since discovered that the difference was the Disc colors. It played Silver, but not Black before. Now it plays Black, but not Silver?!?!?
Ive been searching all over, but havent been able to find an answer. Can anyone help with this???

The reason for this with the early PS2 is when laid on it's side the laser assembly starts to fall away from the disc tray. There are two ways to go about fixing it with one being temporary and the other being permanent. The temporary way is to turn the voltage up supplying the laser so it can "see" the discs better. The permanent way is to replace the whole laser assembly with an updated unit.

I will try to locate the links to all procedures that can be done including the two I posted. With the age of the early PS2's and the proliferation of slim PS2's and PS3's some of these parts might not be available any longer.

They had fixed that on the slim ps2's didn't they? If you can find a used one of those dirt cheap has something diferent wrong that would work. That would be pretty lucky though.

Why do some games lock up when they are loading? I have one that always does it in the same spot. About halfway through the game.

That was one of a few issues that Sony took care of when they designed the slim PS2.

Are your games locking up on the slim PS2?

Yeah it's a slim. It's three games that do it. Guitar hero 1 & 2, and nascar dirt to daytona. I love that stupid game and I can't finish it cause it keeps locking up after the final race of the second season.

These consoles are pretty smart. Maybe you're just not good enough to be playing it so it shuts down to spare you the shame and ridicule of your friends and family. :?:

  That's not it, I have a dominating season going and I want to keep going. I finished the second season and first in the late model dirt cars by a huge margin, and finished the first season and finished first by a decent margin in the truck series. I am ready to move up to nationwide and then cup cars.

I'm sorry, anyone that has mastered Guitar Hero 1&2 can't be all that good at the NASCAR series.

But what does any of this have to do with Monsters console not working? Wait a minute, you didn't go play on his console, did you? That would explain a lot.

The guitar hero games have been known to cause issues with PS2's and the PS3's. I do not what it would take to fix this issue, I'll take a look and see if I can find a solution for you. When it comes to Nascar dirt to daytona the only thing I can think of is maybe a scratch on the disc causing a load error. How long do you play before it starts locking up?

I haven't mastered any guitar hero. Way too freakin hard for me.

Time doesn't matter as for the freezing up. I can play for 5 minutes or 5 days. It always freezes in the exact same spot. I have tried this with three legit copies of the game and tried it on different consoles. Mine always does it no one else's. I ried different ones trying to do process of elimination.

I tried googleing my problem as well as monster's. I even just signed up for ps3news.com and I can't find any info for either problem.

I tried a couple black discs in mine and they work fine. I wonder if the older systems won't play them and the slim's do?

The reason that you cannot find anything relating to these problems is due to next gen consoles coming out. Not meaning there isn't any support for the PS2 but they have taken the backseat to the new stuff.

It sounds like you might have one of the slim PS2's that has a problem with the memory loading up and not dumping it correctly so the system can't load up certain parts of the game being played. That means that it can take only a few minutes for this to happen or several hours since it's very erratic. The only way to solve this problem is to buy a new slim PS2, they're only $99 now so it won't hurt your wallet to bad.

Thanks daddeo. Will ps3 play ps2 or ps1 games? I might just get one of those instead.

Most of the new PS3 consoles will not play PS2 games but will play PS1 games, I don't know why they made it this way :? . Only the older 60 gig and 80 gig versions will. The 60 gig version, I have one :D, has the emotion chip and hardware in it to enable it to play all PS2 and PS1 games. The 80 gig has hardware that works in conjunction with software that enables it play some of the PS2 games and most of the PS1 games. You can still get the 80 gig that is backwards compatible but not the original 60 gig.

That's weird. They are always looking for more ways to make a buck. Thanks for the help.

No prob man.

Daddeo, I should have elaborated I guess, but I looked over several tutorials before I was brave enough to break into it, but any help is much appreciated. All I read talked about cleaning it to make it play which ever discs (silver or black) it wouldnt play. But I cant find anything about this particular situation, ie: it played some (silver), but wouldnt play others (black). All I did was clean (EVERY) lens in it, then test it, and then it would play the black, but NOT the silver ones. Even talked to Sony, and they said they had never heard of that (but they would be GLAD to repair it.....for $45 of course).
Well, I did do ONE other thing....after the last cleaning, the disc would only spin for a split second, then nothing. I discovered the end of the ribbon cable to the laser was messed up (from plugging and unplugging I presume), so I cut just a smidge off, and replugged it into the laser. The disc DID start spinning correctly, but thats ALSO when the "flip-flop" of readable discs reared it ugly head. Im thinking about reexamining the cable, but if I have to cut it again, it'll be to short to cut again, if thats not the prblem.

Any thoughts....anyone???
