Thanks for doing the dirty work Hoopty. I've been pretty busy at work lately, and at nights I've been working on a new painting, so I haven't been able to get on here as much as I'd like to.

You guys, don't hesitate to PM me or Hoopty or Bill if you see something fishy. I don't like to get too moderatorish, but if you guys see something we miss, don't be afraid to point it out.

looks as if there are some students at moscow state university who just got some ip addresses banned.

however, somehow, someway or another when i was looking up the spammers ip, a certain members username came up in a search result. i dunno how that could have happened, and i know nothing about the internet or ways somebody may mask ip's and all that, but all the same it has raised a slight concern.

IP masking is not difficult. Plus if your IP gets banned, you can simply do a release and renew to get a new IP address. MAC filtering is a much better tool although a MAC can also be masked. It is more difficult though.

MAC filtering is not possible on the Internet. Nowhere in an IP packet's header does your computer's MAC address exist. Once your packet traverses a router, buh bye MAC address. MAC filtering can be done on a LAN, however.

"I see" said the blind man. I understand what you are saying regarding the filtering over the internet. When I made that statement, my mind was focused on something else plus the fact that I am a walking ID-10T error

But I was always under the impression your MAC could be tracked through your IP. So much for my Net+ certification :D

Ya, well... certifications exist to acquire jobs, not knowledge
Without actually using the stuff you learn it goes away pretty quickly. At least for me.

Cheers.
