By the way, I did the same with my Losi JRX2 once: turned the whole gearbox around to get the moter in the middle (it were the highdays of the optima-mid).
To keep the moter running right, I trimmed the moterguard of the moterplate and swapped it over to the other side.

Actually I still have a bunch of those parts (used) if you want to restore yours to running state for pretty cheap.
