Buggy Champ Roller Setup?

Post by tom_chang79 »

Anyone have a buggy champ roller that they setup? I'm not using Tamiya's ESC nor their batteries. So I was wondering how did you set yours up?

Any help on what ESC, motor, servo, receiver, and battery would be appreciated....

On my vintage runner I use modernish gear. For the battery, I solder up some matched 3300 GP sub C cell in a hump pack coinfiguration. I used a futaba magnum FM radio with a Novak Cyclone TC esc and a Epic 17turn mod motor. The buggy goes like stink. I've heard of people using brushless set ups but really that's too much power for this chassis.

I got rid of the plastic case and made an electronics tray out of aluminum. I put some RC10 battery cups on, which allow me to run a standard 6 cell pack, and then just mounted the electronics where they fit best. I'm not using the Tamiya ESC either, I've got a little Futaba MC330CR. The stock silver can with the taller gearing makes the car almost too fast. It's a lot of fun.

Thanks for all the tips guys! I'm going to start working on it as soon as I finish my SC10's maintenance (to clear up bench space)...

Mine runs all stock stuff for now, but was going to run a seperate electronics tray like melvinsarmy. How does it affect the flex in the chassis?

Well, what I was wondering more was, I'm running the Competition Alloy chassis on mine, so even if I remove the electronics box, there's plenty of room like MelvinsArmy's Buggy Champ.

My concern was, is there any structural weakness towards the rear, right in front of the transmission, where the electronic box bolts into?

Curious, where does the "real" antenna go? I'm referring to the one from the receiver. I don't see any safe place to put it...

Melvinsarmy, did you wrap your receiver's antenna around the other servo/esc wires?

At the risk of straying somewhat off-topic, I suppose we all remember when we built our Tamiya Frogs that the manual called for us to actually *cut* our receiver wires and tie the cut end around the base of one of those metal antennae screwed onto the chassis.

Yep, I RTFM and ruined a receiver by doing that. :x

Sorry for the off-tangent post, but every time I read this topic, it reminds me of that!

I haven't taken a really good look at the re-re radio boxes to see if they have the hole for the antenna to exit out the back of the box like the originals do

I've got a 2.4ghz radio, I just took the two little antenna and taped them to the top of the steering servo. Figured a radio like that won't get any interference from a servo motor. If you want to run a regular antenna tube, your best bet might might to rig up a mount so that it goes up through the hole in the back of the body. Otherwise you might have to drill a hole in the hard body.
