Non-functional Kyosho Gold wheels

Post by Coelacanth »

Guys, if you noticed this item on eBay, I just thought you should be careful before buying. They sure look nice, but have a close look at the insides of the wheels...there's no drive hex standoffs. I don't see how these wheels are useful for anything but looks (sitting on the shelf) or as front wheels on a 2WD car.

I wrote to the guy noting that the wheels did not appear to be functional, he hasn't bothered to reply or change the listing description. Just a heads up. :)

You can always use a washer like this between the wheel and the hex! :D

mmh... I was watching them too. looked too good to be true. The washer will be useless as soon as there's some power going through it I'm afraid, the whole assembly risk slipping endlessly

I think it will work, have you seen the drive washer on a Scorpion?

As coincidence should have it I randomly came across this thread on a Kyosho message board where similar rims were used. I think they're Duratrax ones. Anyway, they use nothing either and the person made light of that fact in their post. So I dunno... They seem like they are functional.

They must work by being a press or taper fit like treehugger said. Though I would never fully trust rim mounting that works solely on friction, and thats probably why its rarely seen. :P

Now that you mention it I don't think my Shadow uses pins either. I've only had a wheel off once on it.

What size hexes did the Optimas use? Are they 12mm or something different?

tamiyadan wrote:the original optima did not use hex nuts it used a round pressure fit hub with star like teeth to grab, later on kyosho switched to a hex style pressure fit star tooth hub then later they ditched the star teeth and just went to a smooth pressure sit and smooth faced hex. took them 25 years before they made a model with a pin style captured hex hub.

if that was the intent of these rims based on the really old design that is fine you could use them but they will slip because the original plastic hubs were dug into by the star teeth, it will be very difficult to achieve a good lock with these hubs using the old system.

these hubs in the auction are just for show really.

Like this on the Scorpion.

That might've worked for the stock Mabuchi 540 motors, but it'll be useless with the higher-torque motors, especially current brushless setups. In order for a lock-washer like that to work, you'd have to crank it on so tight it'd crush into the aluminum of these gold wheels. And, that won't last for long before you'll be just spinning permanently damaged wheels.

Aren't aluminum rims mainly meant for show anyway? Well besides rock crawlers as they use them for the weight characteristics.

There is an easy solution... Drill 2 holes in the hex and 2 in the wheel. Then you put short pins in between. I hope you understand my drift... :D

I'm totally jealous. The Kyosho Shadow is one of the cars I had as a kid, and that i am trying to track one down now, to add to my vintage collection.

Now that I think of it, I have the bones of an old 1/12 Kyosho Super Alta at home, and it uses a pressure thingy, just like the one in the Scorpion pic.
