Re: On road VONATS build (if it happens this year)

Post by Seabass »

Thanks for the input on the car. I am one of the most ignorant people when it comes to the pan cars.

I really appreciate the info on the chassis, it will help me decide which one to use. The axles are already done, so there is no turning back now, LOL. I never thought about the shims that go into the front and didn't take that in account when I made the brace. That can easily be changed. I also did realize the links would end up dropping as far down as they do at full lock.

As far as my machine goes, I don't have enough travel in my z axis (up and down) to fit the tool, 3 jaw chauck, and rotary table. The unfortunate thing is they don't make chucks much shorter than the 3 jaw I already have and if there was a shorter one, it may not have the capacity to hold the wheel.

I am also working on something else for this car but I am too far away from getting it completed to discuss it here. I will show you guys what I am working on when it gets closer to completion.

Good deal. If you need any help, I have raced 1/12th carpet road and 1/10th superspeedway cars since the late 80s, and there isn't too much new under the sun. Just send along a PM if you have any other questions. I might even have parts in the bins if you need something special.

I have been collecting parts for this car and took a pretty big break from working on it. I finally got most of the car together but still have a few minor things to do. I ended up machining some new axles for the front to bring the front tires out roughly 1/4 inch. The outside edge of the front tires are now even with the outer edge of the rear tires.

I installed an IRS rear axle on the car and I beleive and HPI bottom pod brace witha small kick up and a Composite Craft upper pod brace.

After consulting with the experts the front brace I made has been removed from the car. I am going to machine another brace that will not interfere with the castor in the front of the car.

I have a body on the way to the house so hopefully I can call this one done in the next week or two. Now I need to find some oval races so I can join in the fun.

I have an IRS hub on the right. The left side has the standard 10L hub. I need to find a left IRS hub to match.

The car is turning out nice, Just a tad more to go. Then comes tuning questions for a basic setup to start with.

The front axles are cool and will not hurt anything, however most pan car racers run 1/8th axles cause the balls are bigger and last longer/suffer damage less often. Love the machine work you're doing.

I got the body painted and partially mounted.

I decided to go with my own Nascar theme on this one. I found the Rockstar decals on eBay from a drift car. Did some modifying of the decals to work on this car. I still need to find some numbers and buy some fender decals to make it look the part. Like an idiot, I should have drilled my body post holes before paint. It is very difficult getting the body to line up with the wheel wells. I need to do some more trimming.

I also machined some posts for the rear support. I still have a few other things to do to the car including machining a new front brace for the front suspension. I am waiting for the material to arrive. Other than that I think the car is ready for electronics.

I hope to run some laps with the car around Christmas time. Going home for the holidays where there is an onroad and oval track.

Jake,
Awesome build. Love the CC chassis along with the IRS stuff.

What wheels are those?
