Help with my ZX-R

Hiya everyone. I'm a newb here and so far I love the site. I have been away from RC for a while and want to get some of my older models running right again. I am on my Lazer ZX-R right now. I have a couple of questions for you guys. I am looking for a good set of shocks. Right now its got some beat up gold associated leakers on it. Is there anything that would be a better choice? Its not going to be a shelf car just yet. I'm wanting to take it out to the track and not be totally embarrased. I have a a beat up HPI body on it right now, and would like to find a nice underbody/body/wing for it. I've seen the stocker on ebay, but I've read on here that they aren't holding up well if you want to use them alot. I read of a mention of somebody using a B44 body and making it work. Any ideas? You may just have to rebuild your current shocks. You can likely order the rebuild kits online. Kyosho has fairly decent parts availability. If full shock replacement is necessary, then measure the length of the shocks in mm. Measure form the center of one mounting hole to the other with shock fully extended (removed from the car). For instance, on a 4w I am guessing the shock lengths are in the 85mm range.

Then once you know those shock distances, you can search around the internet. Similarly you can remove one front and one rear shock and go to your local hobby store and find something comparable.

Kyosho makes some of the best shocks. After them, Losi and Associated are reliable. Duratrax, Traxxas, and HPI, are respectable. If you are just racing for a bit of fun and these are cheaper they may not be a bad way to go.

thanks for the reply. They are not the stock Kyosho brand, they are some associated golds with the anodizing worn through, and just plain beat up. I'll take some measurements and maybe search around a bit to find something. I'd like to update it with some threaded bodied shocks and newer tech batteries and electronics.

Here's a pic of the B44 body on a Lazer (not mine though).

As for shocks, see if you can find some older Associated hard coated shocks, the grey ones. A set in decent condition shouldn't set you back much money at all and I think the lengths are pretty close too.

thanks for the pics. I like they way that looks alot. I got some measurements off the shocks F-81mm and R-94mm. I'll start looking around for some replacements.

I'm not sure about Lazer ZX-R damper lengths vs. ZX-5, but these 3Racing shocks are very decent and the price? Maybe the price even looks better than the shocks! I have these on my CYANide car (onroad-modified Turbo Optima) and I like how smooth they are. They're not quite Kyosho Golds, but throw in some lighter-weight oil & open up the holes in the piston plastic circles and they work very nice. Right out of the box, they're quite firm. (Did I just say that?)

Thay are actually quite good i have those. Mine hvent leaked yet and i have been using them both on an zxr and on an cat xls.
The downside is that the zx5 uses short front damper and the zxr uses medium on the rear they are a straight fit. maybe just get the zx front tower since the zx used short front dampers. I got www.fibre-lyte.co.uk to make me an shorter front tower.

Yeah I looked at the 3Racing shocks after drooling over Bullfrogs ZX thread. I may pick those up, just not sure about parts replacement in the states. Although, the last time I changed anything on this car was 93 . Thanks for the help guys
