I don't get the point. I know someone that works as a federal meat inspector that has been off since the shutdown. Upon restarting work they will get 80% back pay accrued during the shutdown. Another waste of our money. I wish my boss would do that for me.

Everybody is demonizing the republicans but really all their saying is that we can't afford to fund Osamacare. Raising the debt ceiling is not fiscally responsible. Osama has added 7trillion the national debt since coming into power. What pisses me off is that these 535 idiots in congress are still drawing a paycheck while other government workers who actually need the money are Furloughed

I am not for or against the Democrats or republicans. I hate both equally.

I have been dreading Obamacare since the inceptoin as I was wondering how badly it would screw us over. The Dems keep saying that it's all the Republicans fault the government shutdown. The ironic part is that it all comes down to Harry Reid. The Repubs wanted Obamacare delayed until it was ready. It was vetoed by Harry Reid. Then they asked for another year just to get things finalized. Again Harry Reid vetoed it. Then the Repubs proposed a bill to do a partial shutdown and Harry Reid agreed too and signed the bill into effect. That makes it Reid's fault.

The repubs wanted one last amendment to Obamacare. They want the penalty tax abolished as a lot of people can no longer afford health insurance under this new healthcare.
Obama has voluntarily delayed Obamacare 17 times. So why can't it be delayed one more year to work all the kinks out?

It's strategy. He pushed it out too take the heat of Benghazi and everything else off of him and try too make the Repubs look like the bad guys.

He's a crafty horrible President.

Wow - very interesting times south of the border I guess.

I've been asked several times by some of my American colleagues about how 'Canadian' health care works and is it true that your taxes go way up and you have to wait a long time to see a doctor etc etc.

SO, let me set the record straight here for you all. This is based ONLY on my personal experience in Ontario and it in no way means that this is going to be indicative of health care across Canada (although I would hope it would be representative)

1. If I have a cough, cold, or other mysterious ailment, I simply book an appointment to see my doctor and I get a prescription or referral to another doctor or get additional diagnostics done (such as blood work or xray). For most things, you can get it done right away without waiting at a local clinic and there is no charge. Just swipe your health card (since you already pay your taxes on it anyways but there is no direct deduction - its just part of your total deductions as far as I know). This happens whether you are employed or not.

2. If you have something BIG (say a stroke), you get taken to an ER nearby and get all the work, stay in the hospital etc and you are covered - again whether or not you have a job or are retired or whatever.

3. If you have something like Cancer, you get a referral to another doctor / specialist. You MAY have to wait for diagnostic to confirm your condition, but depending on where it is, you can also get bumped up. There ARE also private clinics starting to pop up for things like this in larger cities.

So, bottom line - yes we may pay more in taxes, but is your health and welfare of you and / or your family worth something? I know that if I get really sick (stroke, cancer other life threatening illness), or my kids have something that is ongoing, I won't have to mortgage my house to pay for the healthcare.

That's the upside.

The downside is that there are many things NOT covered anymore (which used to be covered) and the doctors and nurses are frequently fighting with the government for more funding. Wait times in ER's can sometimes be long (for non life threatening issues), and lots of new residents have a hard time finding a family doctor.

There may be more issues.

Now - can one of you please explain to me why the US has a debt ceiling that needs to always be legislated? I mean let's say they raise it again (likely from my point of view compared to the alternative) - what is the plan to get spending under control and start paying it back? Or how will you raise revenues without raising taxes? (BTW, one big difference between countries is if I win the lottery, I do NOT get taxed on it. Nor would I get taxed if I won a big payday in a casino for example).

I also find it very interesting that the politics are SO polarized in the US - here because we essentially have 3 main parties (although there is the Parti Quebecois in Quebec and another party in Alberta that escapes me now), people are not as loyal to anyone particular party that I can see. Many will simply vote for the 'other guy' if the guy in power pisses them off. Its quite an interesting dynamic in my opinion

I do think that the fact the folks working in the govt south of the border who aren't getting paid is a bit of sad statement and it is only hurting the people who are average folks that need those funds to pay for their houses, cars, yes - but what about their families and kids who need books, food and clothes? What do you do then? At the end of the day BOTH sides of the political spectrum need to set aside their differences, sit down and talk it out until they figure out a compromise that works for everyone.

Again, the above is just MY opinion and how I see it from the perspective of the Great White North

DITO!!! It's so funny all these people who are a bunch of sheep who really believe the Republicans are demons trying to close the government for no reason. These are what us republicans like to call low information voters who get there political news from dateline NBC. I mean come on there's only 17% of the government closed for the reason Shodog stated but we still are sending aid to the middle east to keep Obama's cronies happy . It's about Obama care people the news won't even talk about why after Obama got the affordable health care passed he immediately made him and the rest of the senate exempt from it and all his big business funders and union supporters. Wake up America !!!!

Not my place to say, or even going to get into the mix here, but I read this a day or two ago on CNN.

"The Obama administration withheld some military aid to Egypt in August. Another U.S. official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the move to suspend assistance -- more than $1 billion is given each year -- has been prompted by an "accumulation of events," including recent violence against protesters, dozens of whom were killed over the weekend."

http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/08/us/egypt-aid/index.html?iref=allsearch

I just thought I would post this to give everyone a read, I can't imagine the health care issues and the waiting for doctors or the over spending. I would freak out on my government!!

Our healthcare thing is a joke.

There's a lot of people who are so happy with it yet they have no idea what it is about.

1 example..... Everyone is under the notion that if you have a pre-existing condition that you will automatically be covered... Not true. If you have a pre-existing condition than you were suppose to have your application in by February of 2013. Yes that's correct. You should have had your application turned in BEFORE the healthcare act was even live by almost a year.

2 days before Obamacare went live my wife was diagnosed with stage 1 Cervix cancer. We went in for her surgery on the day Obamacare went live and found out that we were dropped for a "now" pre-existing condition. I was paying $46.31 for my entire family of 5. Now the cheapest insurance I can find thru Obamacare is $1,213.00 per month. Plus add too it that even if I bought the Obama insurance it doesn't go into affect until January. So now I have a wife with cancer and no insurance.. I don't see how anyone can think Obamacare is so great.

Plus if it is so great, than why did Obama make himself and his "friends" exempt from it?

In general I make it a point to not chime in on political discussions, but I just can't hold my tongue any longer. I look out for myself and my family. PERIOD! It's no accident that I have a job with excellent benefits. The government can go fuk itself. It pisses me off that I pay social security tax when I can take that money and make quite a bit more worth out of it than I can ever hope to see from my government leaders. They blow it on welfare for lazy slobs that work the system and have no intention of bettering themselves, but would rather make more babies to raise their welfare credits. In the area I live in the people I speak of are predominantly white; so please don't label me a racist. I watch them drive up in their SUVs and drop their kids off at the daycare I pay good money for and punch in their code while I step out of my Kia and hand over my check while their baby's daddy sits in the Explorer and smokes his Swisher Sweet. Meanwhile, the daycare has to put up multiple signs reminding them to punch in their codes because they're too irresponsible to even do that...

I'd love to see the responsible hardworking tax payers of the U.S. finally stand up and show the power we have. Let our nuts hang and tell all the lazy slobs to get their ass out there and contribute to society and pay for their own goddamn food! I'm all for helping people, but let's get our educational system in order and spend our welfare money on educating rather than supporting.

So sorry U.S. government that I got married and support my family. What was I thinking committing such a terrible act??!

I'm sure I'll sound like an a-hole if this taken out of context, but I have a feeling that most of the hardworking members of this forum will know exactly where I'm coming from.

Couldn't of said it better. Help is for people with legitimate problems. Laziness is not a legitimate problem.

This will piss you off. The more kids you have the less taxes you pay. Everyone knows that, BUT once you have a certain number of kids the amount of taxes you pay greatly reduces and you can qualify for all sorts of federal, state, and county help for literally everything you can think of. I use too work with a guy and he found everything he could in order too quit his job permanently and live off of all the various "help" out there.
