skyfly problems: skyfly and servos

Post by pcrussell50 »

setup:
-rc10 gold pan
-associated BL motor/speed controller
-skyfly gt3b
-mid-80s' airtronics servo for steering

background:
-just installed this stuff today
-motor/speed controller was supposed to be a never used takeoff, from an ebay seller suggested here. they both looked totally clean and brand new.
-sjyflygt3b was purchased by me from hobbypartz, new in box, never used
-airtronics steering servo was bought brand new by me in high school in the mid 80's. it has always worked, including less than a year ago when i still had the old original airtronics radio still working. (only reason it doesn't work anymore is, i left the transmitter near the tire of my car, and backed over it, crushing it.)

sypmtoms:
1) throttle control
-when i plug it into channel 2 on the receiver, the speed control beeps and then i get constant rapid flashing green, and it doesn't work
-when i plug the throttle cable into channel 1 (the steering channel), it plays the musical beep sequence, i get a steady green on the speed controller, and the steering wheel controls the throttle as you would expect.

why would throttle work on channel 1 but not channel 2 like it's supposed to? the skyfly is nearly two years old, but brand new... i never took it out of the box until today.

2)old airtronics steering servo
does not work no matter what channel port i plug it into on the receiver. totally dead. ALSO, i have an identical spare servo, (used to be a throttle servo on an old nitro buggy), and it doesn't work either. dead as a doornail.

is it possible that somehow my old servos are incompatible with this new equipment? if so, i'm happy to buy the right cheap chinese servo from hobbypartz... but i have no idea what size to get.

Hmm, mixing and matching radio bits. Only thing I could suggest would be to make sure the polarity of the signal and power wires on the items are correct... and if all else fails try another radio/receiver.

Did you bind the tx and rx? I would bind those, then make sure all of the features are at 100% like expo and dual rate. Then do the esc setup. The servo should work just fine.

Thanks guys. I guess i'll order a new receiver and try that.

while i'm at it, i was thinking of ordering a new steering servo too. what do you guys recommend? since my tx/rx is cheap chinese, i'm ok trying a cheap chinese steering servo. any recommendations?

the hobbypartz web site is not very helpful for choosing steering servos for 1/10 buggies. and i'm too long out of the game to know myself. i'm still a little mysitified as to why BOTH of my airtronics servos don't work any more.

Check hobbyking.com

Search for waterproof and you'll find a bunch of servos for under $15.

You may be underestimating my ignorance here. I went to hobbyking and searched using the exact term you gave, "waterproof". About half the results were for things that aren't even servos. Of the returns that were servos, they were in a HUGE variety if weights, torques, and actuator speeds. Which brings me right back to my question:

What weight of servo producing how much torque at what speed, is the right capability for a vintage rc10?

And one more thing... Do people use servo savers any more? And if so which ones fit these Chinese servos?

Ok, so now i know where to buy a steering servo for my skyfly gt3b, BUT...

Any advice on HOW to pick a steering servo?

Since i have no idea whatsoever what size servo to pick for my classic rc10, can i just pick the biggest one i can find and call it good? or will that one be too big? :cornfused:

Don't worry anout the weight of the servo. Look at the speed of it. anything under .20sec is good and the fewest time is the fastest.

For the torque look for one that 's at least 9kg.

This one would be a good one.http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__8775__BMS_620_High_Torque_Servo_9_1kg_15sec_45g.html

As for servo savers
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXND49&P=ML
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFNE8&P=7
Either of these would work. The black plastic tooth pieces on the parts tree are adapters too fit various servos.

thought i'd close this one out with some good news. got my new chinese servo from hobbypartz, the one 'juice linked for me. installation was a breeze... it was identical form factor to the old airtronics servo it replaced, so everything fit exactly right, even the servo saver. plugged it in and was on my way with a working brushless/2.4GHz gold pan...

...at least it's gold for now...

the B-pan stealth and B-pan chassis i got off ebay are both black, and i suppose i ought to swap over to that one before i destroy my old pre-stealth, ball diff.
