Graphite. Another dirtoval car.

Post by Johnboy72 »

Ok, so one of the reasons I bought an earlier lot was because of an early graphite. Well when I got back off deployment, I was sad to see someone had cut the front to put the RC10T frontend on it. So a couple of RC10's popped up on my buddy's FB Classifieds page (see them often on there) and luckily the guy held the two cars for me. One was a really nice CE 6 gear. But this is the car I want to restore. An early graphite. I know Reggie has the perfect example of a NY dirt oval graphite. When I was racing dirtoval RC10s I was stuck with the gold pans. I had stock everything, hand me down motors, cheap Radio Shack 1200 packs, Tamiya plugs, Futaba electronics, stock rear rims with waffles, Tamiya smoothies on the front, etc. Nothing fancy. So I had to sit and watch all the fast guys running shiny graphite chassis', Novak and Tekin electronics, shiny chrome rims, waffle/dynamite tires, matched packs, etc etc. Well as much as I begged my father, it never happened. Then I moved away from NY. Well now I have one of my own and I need to get started on it. Tonight I just wanted to mock it up.
Picked this up for $60 along with some RPM parts

These parts are dyed purple but it's dark and barely noticeable. I like it.

So looking through the stuff, I found these Smoothies with the aluminum outter front rim. So started polishing and finally found something to mount my Dynamites on.

So threw some old stuff on it. Have to find my Novak FM receiver and my old speedo. But found this old Novak laying around. I really don't want to cut up a battery cup but the batteries don't fit in there. So have to rethink this one.

Now just need to find a Walt's handout motor and some other goodies.

Nice find! Are you going to make a body for it and paint it to match the vintage look or do you have a old one laying around?

I only have one remaining Winter Classic Handout Kyosho motor, but LMK if there are any other parts I can help you out with on this car! Looks like a really good start.

I remember when I first ran in the Novice class at Walt's, with a (gasp) all white RC10 Graphite Team Car, Novak 410-M5, Trinity Maxilla stick pack and that horrible Kyosho handout that I saved up all winter 91' for, and bought in the spring of 92' (all the noobs ran white parts LOL) . Box-stock, with the stock 2.0 rear rims and Proline 2.0 waffles (sucked) and Tamiya Smoothies on grasshopper star rims and a buds front bumper (looked like a sprint wing) and an off the wall crap EDM shell painted in a Mark Martin theme (poorly too). Eventually Jason and Fred Hagg, Steve Poppy and Bernie McGraw got me pointed in the right direction with the car and what to do to it..but man I ran a shoe-string budget with that thing, since my dad put all the cash into our pan cars for Comp Corner and Walts-

I think I have that wing. The fronts are the tamiya 5 spoke center and inside with the aluminum outside. Now I have the plastic 3pc here but only two rear and one front with messed up Chrome. Was it the rough rider wheel? Or CRP? Think they are the ones on your Graphite you posted awhile back.

As for the body, I tried to get in contact with Jack Johnson about my old Cadillac and was informed he was physically unable to sign autographs. So realizing this, I realized I never got Bob McCreadie's autograph. Maybe because we were always around him growing up. Heck I remember uncovering his 95 Syracuse car in the shop to see about building an RC version. He's a cool guy. So I think I'm going to build one last Barefoot body and have him sign it. This car will hopefully be the car I always wanted and never had so it has to have my childhood hero on it.

I knew Jack has been sick for the last couple of years, but didn't think he was that bad. I thought I saw him a couple of times this past summer at Fonda.

Yeah, sent a message on his FB page and that's what they sent back to me. Sucks.

Here is a photo from one of my old cars. Think this pic was taken in 95.

These are the rims I remember all the fast guys using. In chrome and gold. I think my old friend Jim Cronk reports he still has some.

I have this one as a template (Black.and white and gold Labbat body, and I was on WSTM Ch 3 with it LOL) so I can always make a template off of it, in case you want to make one for your car.

Well I'm debating which McCreadie body to do. With all modern flat decks the biggest obstacle would be remembering how we built the nose. I mean I remember the concept and it's in my head but can I transfer that to my hands/scissors?

And the wheels. Sexy.
