Dang! That looks great! Color combo looks sinister. I just received some carbon fiber goodies yesterday , so I will update my build thread also.

Thanks!

I failed to mention I traded Russ Winn for the first DS (tub). He set it up to run oval with 31mm wheels on the right, 26mm wheels on the left. I will take some pics to reference the Mustang Saleen body with different wheel sizes. 31mm is the ticket for the Saleen body using wide hex adapters in the rear. Still not sure on the body but I am leaning toward a 65 Mustang.

Patience, Lobo san  Today I picked up the crush tubes for the rear carriers from the LHS. I trust this will resolve the binding issue. I may still need to modify the existing hex adapters, which are slightly modified for 1/4" axles, or try the T4 hex adapters. Unfortunately the LHS did not have the T4s.

I checked out the HPI sight for Mustang bodies and learned they make the 66, not the 65, body. No LHS has the body in stock :? Also trying to sort out a set of used 31mm rims and tires. As you already know, a new set of the vintage variety will set you back $40+. Did I mention I am cheap

Hey Knucklebuster..... ask, and someone will provide a link

This is a 65 Mustang by HPI. A SHELBY GT-350 body.
http://www.hpiracing.com/en/part/17508
Available at tower or ebay or elsewhere but still available - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXKYM8&P=ML

http://www.ebay.com/itm/HPI-17508-1965-Ford-Shelby-GT-350-Clear-Body-200mm-/191179890716?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c8335a01c

A sample pic from HPI site:
Image
the only difference i see between the 65 body and the 66 is that the 66 doesn't have a hood scoop.

Wheels: What wheels are you trying to use? HPI vintage wheels? 31mm all around?
vintage set 31mm wheels for under 7 bucks with free shipping http://www.ebay.com/itm/HPI-Racing-3821-Vintage-5-Spk-Wheel-31mm-Black-6mm-Offset-2-/131232784931?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e8e156223

vintage set of 31mm tires for under 10 bucks http://www.ebay.com/itm/HPI-102994-Vintage-Performance-Tire-31mm-D-Compound-2-/131196920255?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e8bf221bf

1 set of vintage tires for 5 bucks http://www.ebay.com/itm/HPI-102994-Vintage-Performance-Tire-31mm-D-Compound-2-/301231001485?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4622c44f8d

Hope this helps.

Now i need some enlightenment....Crush tube? is this the aluminum spacer between the two bearings in the rear axle carriers?

You DA MAN! Thanks for tracking down all the parts :D

Crush tube, nailed it. BTW if you are not big on the black rims, you might try Krylon paint for plastics. I mentioned it elsewhere on the site and used it to paint the outside of a tired lexan body, 1:1 hubcaps. Never chipped or peeled. The hubcaps saw many pressure washes too.

The front end conversion has to be done to use those wheels right? Also, will they fill out the wheel well like the the factory rims and tires?

Yep, you got it bigmd, you need to front end conversion to use those wheels. Although the above blue and white mustang is mounted on what i think may be an RS4 nitro, I believe the wheels will fill out nicely on that body mounted on a DS. I use the 26mm 0mm offset for the front and the 31mm 6mm offset for the rears. they clear the body when the suspension compresses.

I haven't tried that body with original DS wheels but i will try today and post a pic for comparison.

Argh... offset, something I have not had to consider with any of my toys

I worked on the DS last night and sorted out the binding issue. The problem was actually the modified rear hex adapter.

I realized Russ did not set up the car with right stagger to run oval. The rears are 31mm, 6mm offset. Fronts are 26mm, 0mm offset. The inner front rims rub the inner hinge pins at full turn.

I normally reduce servo throw but doing so on the this car looses quite a bit of turning radius. I am going to start rotating the different size/offset around to check for clearance.
I was hoping to run the same size/offset all around for rotation. Argh... offset

Lobo, fyi the GT body is a fastback, the other is not

Thanks for the info on the mustang.
My yellow 66 mustang was an happy accidental purchase; i thought i ordered the mustang coupe not realizing it was a gt version. I was like, "wow cool side louvers" then there was a    "Dang, i ordered the wrong body" moment. no worries since i managed to get the right body later one

Glad you figured out the binding issue.

For your front wheel/hingepin rubbing issue, maybe a wider hex? I just returned the original HPI vintage 31mm wheels with 6mm offset back onto my blue camaro NDS. Im using the sc10 4x4 front axle hubs with only the slightest of hingepin rub and thats only on one side. So light is the rub that if i dialed back on the servo 1% or 2% the wheel will clear but not be enough to lose significant turning radius.

Thanks Lobo. I just rotated the tires around with different adapters. The modified hex adapters are wider than the HPI adapters and did help with clearance. I currently have 20 deg B4 caster blocks with either JC, SC10 or ??? carriers, not sure. The carriers required shims currently placed under the carrier. I am going to move the shims to the top of the carrier and see if I get a little more wiggle room.

I moved the shims and effectively eliminated rub on the hinge pin. Moving the axle down brought the hinge pin closer to the diameter of the rim :D
