Any reason to go one type/manufacturer of battery over another? The only semi-local shop to me is a Hobbytown USA, fwiw.

only reason to buy locally is if you want to support your LHS whether it be a hobbytown or mom&pop store. If you want to save some $ there are all kinds of places where you can get more battery for the buck. Depending on your patience level and what you want to do with it I picked up a bunch of GensAce batteries off the internet for about the same price of one of the LHS LIPOs. Good enuf for bashing and not out alot of money if my daughter ignores me when I tell her that when it slows down its time to quit and recharge :|

I found an older t-maxx controller laying around, can I simply make it work with what I have now? Or would that necessitate swapping out all the electronics?

The receiver in your picture is 75mhz, the Traxxas controller is 27mhz. The transmitter and receiver have to be on the same band and the crystals have to be a matching pair on the same channel. If you had the receiver to the Traxxas controller you could make it work by swapping the Futaba receiver for the traxxas.

Throttle ch2

27mhz you can usually cross brands, 75mhz not so much.
