RC10 Shock Bind

Post by Jared J »

So, I've been getting great help for my gold pan i am restoring to do a rest mod. And so here is another question, about a shock. When i emptied the shocks of their oil and contents. (this shock has seals still), The piston is sticking to the interal shock body. it ws never like this before. the other shocks are fne but i havent done anything to the shock to cause this. IF i were to just put the oil in, would it be fine and i can go on rebuilding more. or do i need a new shock body? and when i put the new silicon oil in the shocks, would the older seals swell? or do i need to replace all four shocks? These are bottom loading shocks.

If the piston is sticking and it didn't before, it's most likely a slightly bent shock shaft. If it binds just due to the orings then a drop of oil would free them up.

Shocking binding problem found???

Post by Jared J »

Okay, so i believe i found the issue with the horrible binding I had. The original piston (it has a notch, not a hole) i believe swelled and is now way to big to even fit. so, i pushed on a modern small bore piston which was very tight to put on, and it seems to fit juust right but with ever so slightly a little gap between piston and shock body. Will this hurt the cars' performance? and what shafts will i need to replace the old ones when i need to. what is the size. Im really hoping to order EVERYTHING tonight. Also, in the original manual, there is this rubber tube, where do i find new ones?

A shock will feel funny until you have filled them with oil.. It's not advisable to run the shock thru it's motion without oil you just ruin the o rings.. Get some o rings and some green slime,it's pretty much compulsory when building any shocks.... The slime is used to coat an protect the o rings an make your shocks last longer before needing rebuilt...

the piston was swollen. im serious. The newer small bore fit right in. The older piston was bigger than the hole for shock body.
