Here's my Kyosho Turbo Optima 2019 Re-release that I just finished. This build was very nostalgic for me because I just couldn't get this car when it first came out, and I was only 13. I couldn't get enough money for it, and couldn't get my grades good enough to win it outright. I used to covet this thing and stare at it for hours in the old Tower Hobbies catalogs, and I remember debating with friends on the bus about this car versus the Hornet, the Hotshot, and the RC10. :D

For this build, I wanted to duplicate the box art, but I wanted something to be "not quite accurate" with it, so I opted for a darker, candy apple red for a richer color. This led to a more difficult painting process because the red section on the side pods of the body are actually decals in the original kit. So I had to paint them on masking the section just right. I think it came out pretty nice.

The build thread with more pics is here --> https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=44322

This is a Tamiya Nissan Skyline GTR R32 that I got in a lot off eBay thanks to my good friend Bormac... seller wouldn't post, but Jason went above and beyond to pick this up for me, package the lot together, and get into the post. Thanks mate :D

When I got it, the car was in a sad state... the body was structurally sound, but dirty as anything, the decals were mostly peeling off or gone, and the wing and side mirrors were unpainted white plastic. As for the chassis, it was so heavily caked with Aussie bulldust that it could have been a Member of Parliament!

The chassis was torn down completely, and all the plastic parts were run through an ultrasonic cleaner at least five times, before a final wipe down. Reassembly began with replacement bearings where necessary (most of them!), but as with any Tamiya TA02 chassis, it went together pretty easily. The correct screws were provided (straight self-tapping and/ or machine screws, not bent screws and wood screws!), and before you know it, the chassis was rebuilt. Extras along the way included brake disc wheel hexes and an original Tamiya alloy motor mount.

Electricals include period-correct Futaba radio gear and Futaba MC310CB ESC, and a newish silver can provides a surprising amount of speed.

On to the body, and the majority of the old decals were removed, just leaving the detail items (head and tail lights, grille, windows). The body was then washed, and then a set of Kyosho Skyline R32 Calsonic decals were used to brighten it up, seeing as the car was already in Calsonic Blue. The Kyosho body is slightly larger that it's Tamiya counterpart, so I had to be judicious in the placement of some. After the decals, the wing and mirrors were given a coat of paint as well, and mirror faces added. Then it was all put together, and the result you see before you!

Quite proud of how this turned out.... and even though it only has a silver can motor, this thing looks great when running!

Alex

P.S. Next year, maybe a Daytona.....
