Yet another TRX-1 for Lonestar!

Post by Lonestar »

Hi folks,

As you might know I have a big soft spot for Traxxas' first race buggy. As lockdown is getting looser now and the onroad track is reopening, and I'm back to team manager / main mechanic maintenance slave for my team (composed of myself, my 13yo, my 10yo, so there is quite a bit to do  ), I thought I'd quickly do a hack job with some partial projects that I had laying around for a while now and cobble them best parts together to generate yet another TRX-1.

So here we are - It's not 100% perfect but it's very very nice still, with some peroxyde and a further cleaning it'd be pretty darn close to as perfect as can be.

That body was identified as a Dahm's Torpedo in the "what is it" thread, possibly by our very own @GoMachV when I said I would bin it at some point - which now makes me realize as I'm typing this that Jeff eve sent me a note saying he would happily take it instead of me thrashing it... I hope you're not too upset, Jeff

Anyway, that body had suffered quite a bit at the front nose, and was very cracked. Additionally I thought it looked ugly.... hence why I wanted to bin it in the first place. But once I unearthed those Pink Rims and that pink wing, I figured out the combo might work work well after all, with those pink Novak stickers on the side! so I quickly tried another thing I'd had in mind for a while now: fixing cracks with plastic mesh and a hot glue gun. I'm happy to report that it works quite well, as long as the suface is clean. The gun helps not put adhesive everywhere, as opposed to resin or shoegoo for instance. Then all it takes is to trim the extra net with your tool of choice.

In the end, the car looks pretty good and sooooo early 90's - actually, late 80's with such colors!

Hope you like it :)

I dig the 80's colors. I always liked the look of the TRX-1 along with the Radiator.

That plastic tape is it like drywall tape?

I've used a 3M product, the clear chassis protective film that is available thru JConcepts, to reinforce body stress points at the front nose. On the exterior, it blends in alright. Seems to stop/manage tearing/cracking of the lexan pretty well. I still want to try that mesh tape method at some point.

I still think they should have named this car the "Talon". Copyright issues bitd I guess (according to RCCA "What's New"). Might explain the boxart green and blue pointy talon-like paint scheme.

At any rate, nice buggy, dude.
Hope you're doin' something fun.

Thanks for the kind words! Yes, that's a full trip down Memory Lane with this one, no neo-retro this time ;)

Thanks Mark for the comments :)

Yes - the 3M protective film (or one of its cheaper clones...) would actually work very well too, as it doesn't "tear", I never thought about it. Great suggestion, I will try it next time!

I am aware of the "Talon" story too, there must be some truth to it, I've heard it many times by now... then again all it maybe took was an RCCA article

Drywall tape and Shoe Goo is a great way to strengthen the weaker areas of a body, like the front/rear and corners. It looks pretty much like your plastic mesh tape, but I think it's often a green color.
