RC12L (W?) questions!

Post by shang »

Hello, new member here. I just picked up an RC12l on my local clasifieds for $20. I’ve wanted one since I was a kid! It was missing the slipper/diff/hub assembly. I found some NOS parts and have more coming in the mail. I’ll slowly piece it together.

I was curious if anyone knew anything about this front end assembly?

That certainly does look like an RC12L rear pod, but the front suspension is not 12L nor does the chassis have 12L suspension mounting holes. Pan cars are somewhat new to me so I can't help beyond that but I'm sure the wizards here will chime in. :)

I'm in a very similar situation with my own 12LW: https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=46447 and https://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=37&t=46431

Just like yours, it came with a rear axle and a left hub, but no diff hub, no diff guts and no thrust assembly. I'm still piecing it together, just finalizing a working thrust assembly. Hunting down stuff that will work together has been interesting.

Doing some Googling tells me the front end and chassis is most likely from TRC, but they had their own rear pod design(s) so not sure if the chassis is from a 3rd party like Composite Craft to meld the TRC front end to a 12L rear or if it was a different car altogether. Someone here will certainly know.

Based on the Delta body mounts and that they used the same type of beam, I’d see if Delta sold a chassis conversion for the 12L

Thanks! That looks like the one! It’s definitely a 2 bolt 12l rear axle assembly. It’s missing thrust washers. I’ve ordered a handful of parts. I’ll post as I get it out together. Not sure my plans for it at the moment other than getting it to a complete roller state.

Poking through the RC12LW manual, it looks like they did away with the bearing style thrust washers and went to a cone? I found an old article stating that the cone was more predictable. I found the parts listed here and ordered them. I’ll so new bearings, washers, diff balls and washers, cone and spacer are all on the way. I’ll see what I can do with it.

Here is the manual I referenced.

I actually found it on Amazon. It looks to be an AE hop up part. I did get the last one. I think it was fairly cheap. Under $5.
