Ronbo's Masami/Cliff Lett Worlds Works 91

Post by Ronbo »

Decided to build the Works 91 (always wanted one) while figuring out the EXOdesign 870/YZ10 in other thread.

Most know the obvious differences from the 870/yZ10, arms, C hubs, chassis plate. But I can say in addition, the aluminum bulkheads feel smoother, the internal planetary gears are black with the cross pins now 1 piece vs 2. Not sure how that will affect performance/durability.
I have Masami painted body coming, plus this shell I will do in CLiff Letts scheme.

Finished up the roller. Just need to decide/collect the electronics side of things and waiting on painted body and order from rubrix.com. Once the weather is more consistently warmer here in the PNW, I will start painting all the bodies I need painted for these projects.

I found it a pleasant build, other than the crappy metal in the control rods and shock ends.
I do like the TF340 and TR380 tires, they would seem probably very good for the vintage dirt tracks we want BITD.
Since the EXODesign chassis (there seem to be plenty aftermarket now) I have for my 870/YZ10 would bolt right up, I would say if anyone wanted a new Re Re Yoke, Id go with the Works 91. The geometry and components seem better. Not sure if I'm a fan of left side lipo setup, but man, would it have been awesome on an old school dirt fluffy oval.

Finally updated and finished the car for now. With the exception of a few tire/wheel and hardware details that is. After research, I have come to the conclusion that the pics that inspired me for the Masami Works 91 body (thanks Rubin painter at rubrixrc.com) are of his 91 JMRC winning car. Once I get the hang of MCI make your own decals, I plan to update it a bit here and there. I believe since Masami didn't win, his car isn't well documented.
I went on a Novak 610RV spree on eBay (3!) after getting the first at local track in used showcase (4!). Since tracking down a M1C might be difficult, I figured this is the same year, and I'm not that picky.
I picked my Reedy Mr. M 13T double, as that is what Cliff ran in his Works 91 winning car and I figured Masami would too. In the cutaway photo, I cannot tell what motor that is, it has a different end bell. Maybe someone does.
Since I ordered the Masami body (no way I can paint that well!) before finding out by research a version for another upgrade to this chassis...

Soo, after researching the best I could with pics concerning the IFMAR Worlds 91 Works 91 cars, I've come to some conclusions. I thought it odd that Masami wouldn't have the same chassis setup as Cliff Lett's 3 view pic that's easily obtained during a search. Well, from close up in these pics, he did, its just not documented since he didn't win the championship. I thought it odd, and confirmed with the pic below that during the final main, he had yellow rims!

Soo after coming across Berzerk RC, they offer this chassis set which is next on the agenda. At first, I thought first pic on website was just their rolling chassis set, but comparing the two pics with the used servo tape etc, it is the same car, the real one. These cars were kept under wraps at the time and I get that Yokomo always tailored the car to the track they are going to race at for championships.

Bezerk offers this chassis set for the Re Re, lipo or nicad setup, so swap out will be simple. I don't see any instructions, as I'm not sure where certain plates go. Plan on painting the body in Cliff Lett colors and making up some decals from MCI.

I need to finish the ROAR Nats YZ10, then the Dragonpunch RC10 long arm chassis at a minimum before taking this on. I still have some 4WD conversions to build.... :D
