Any new So Cal R.C. track coming??.

Post by VinnyBruno »

I started my RC ing in 1990 in the SoCal Orange County area. Then it seemed to be the Mecca of the RC industry. With several 1/10 scale tracks around. The Ranch, RCH, SoCal raceway and some mom and pop places. Any race day could have several PRO full time racers there. Since O.C.R.C. (Orange County Radio Controlled raceway) closed a few years ago there has been no track to replace it. So like others, I have had all my gear in storage.
Now with all this re-re-reissue resurgence it’s got my attention again. I’m ordering stuff and getting my stuff out, remembering some of the fun and friendships I had. I’m bummed there is no local track in Orange County. I realize the caliber of a O.C.R.C. track could be nearly impossible and infinitely expensive to open and operate. But with all the vintage stuff going on it would seem a smaller Mom and Pop type raceway could work.
Anyone heard anything about a track in the future???

Sadly the general conversation is how will any track survive. SoCal is high rent and space cost. SDRC in San Diego has a new owner who was able to negotiate a new 5 year lease from what I have read so they should be safe for a bit. Was very close to closing permanently.

Have you looked at The Farm over in Yucaipa? Probably not all that close but might be worth the drive. Heard a lot of great things about it especially since it's at his house and won't be going anywhere.

For 1/10 in socal you are going to have to travel outside the LA/OC area for the type of track you are looking for. There is huckleberry rc in anaheim, but they mainly run 1/8 and short course. It's a nice outdoor hardpacked dusty track, but maybe a little too risky for 1/10, or vintage stuff, when running with the 1/8th scalers at the same time.
Old school racing all the way!

There is a good selection of on-road tracks available in So Cal but 1/10 off road is much less common. The Dirt at Perris changed their 1/10 track to a dirt oval and I thought I heard the the new Speedlot RC in Ramona was going to have a 1/10 track alongside their 1/8, but they went dirt oval instead. SDRC is pretty much it.

The Dirt in Perris will be having a 1/10 race in September as part of the JBRL series.

I wonder if that could be scaled up as a hobby wide business model to increase the number of tracks in the US. Looking for residences that can support a commercial track rather than renting a separate commercial property. Not a wholly original idea but, maybe one whose time has come?

Our local track is like that. Just a dudes back yard, although he does have a couple buildings on the property as well. He's in a semi industrial area.
