RCPS or Lunsford Turnbuckles?

Post by CalPolyME »

Any way to tell if these are RCPS or Lunsford?
The four on the left are 0.1255" in diameter.
The six on the right 0.1235" in diameter.

Technically all ten are Lunsford... RCPS's titanium parts were just rebranded Lunsford products.

.0020 in. is within manufacturing tolerances for a 4-40 screw.

the nuts on lunsford turnbuckles I believe are stainless steel but those look different between the sets (other than being more chewed up). you can check to see if they are magnetic.

but ultimately, RCPS and Lunsford with this construction are the same.

Most stainless isn't magnetic either.
Consistency is the key I keep misplacing.

Yes correct. But if they happen to be plated steel and are magnetic it will definitely indicate they aren't lunsfords.

The dull grey looks like stainless, as opposed to the silvery blue (zinc) or bright (chrome) hue of plated hardware. Could be someone spun a new set of stainless nuts onto the turnbuckles on the right to replace gnarly originals while the turnbuckles on the left still sport the gnarly originals.

Close inspection under an LED magnification lens shows that the nuts look like the same material up close. I think all the nuts are aluminum, but the ones on the left have some gray oxidation. I used some fine grit diamond stones to clean up all the gouges then did a light pass with a buffing wheel. After cleaning them up and removing the oxidation, they all look the same.
