new guy with junior 2
new guy with junior 2
hey guys, found this site last night and joined.
let me start by saying i havent been into the sport in 20 years.
i use to race in the 80 and mid 90's. ( carpet oval )
the sport around here kinda died out. all my stuff has been tucked away for years.
ok, fast forward to today, theres a new hobby store in my home town they have 2
dirt tracks off road course and a dirt oval. the oval track is what i want to run.
i asked about what i could make work with my junior 2 / shocks, arms, wheels, tires, etc.
they had a blank look on there face. know one can tell me anything , of course they say its to old and i should buy all new.
if i have to do that than the heck with it, from what i have read on here sounds like
there are parts we can use on the junior 2's.
can anyone help me out with suggestions and what would work? please
i will post some pics of it when i can ( at work doing inventory all weekend )
oh and on my junior 2 i have the dirt oval conversion on it. so mounted is a late model body.
but i have the buggy body also.
thanks guys

Welcome aboard.
Posting pics of what you have would be helpful. There are a few oval gurus on the board that should be able to give you some tips. I run oval and am building up an old-school losi oval car to run next spring when outdoor season starts. I'm not much help as I only recently started with the oval thing myself.

Welcome to RC nirvana,man!
I've never run a car in dirt oval (looks like a lot of fun, though!),so I can't really give any setup advice.
Your Junior 2 can be made as (almost) capable as any other cars you'll be competing with and everyone, especially us old time Losi addicts, love seeing a vintage Losi competing and beating other late model cars.

here are a few quick pics of my car, remember its been up in my attic for about
15 or so years , i know i have to clean it..lol
i never got to race this either i ran it a few around the house.
if anyone could give me any info on parts that are available that would fit so i could
go run some dirt oval i would be very thankful.

Re: new guy with junior 2
Wow that looks to be in great condition for its age! Very nice looking oval racer.
35 years of RC and still broke!
Re: new guy with junior 2
thanks, so let me see, your calling me old...lol
the pictures really doesnt do it justice, it's not as dirty/ dusty as the pics
make it look like. the shocks need to be rebuilt or replaced.
i just realized you been in it for 20 years...

Re: new guy with junior 2
Looks great, just put a couple screws in the lower holes for the rear shock tower, and install a chassis brace up front and you are good to go.
Re: new guy with junior 2
k, can you please tell me what you meant buy a chassis brace in the front?
remember i havent been in the sport for over 20 years.

Re: new guy with junior 2
Losi part # a-4047 molded chassis brace. it is #18 in figure 16 of the manual: http://www.vintagelosi.com/Manuals_files/Junior2.pdf It is page "8" of the print manual, but on p 11/36 of the pdf.bhamptn wrote:k, can you please tell me what you meant buy a chassis brace in the front?

Without that there a front end impact is much more likely to crack the chassis plate.
Re: new guy with junior 2
oh ok , i just got the brace out and looked at it but with the other plate for the shocks on the front the brace will not go on un less i put the original tower back on
then the body would not fit
then the body would not fit
Re: new guy with junior 2
ok guys, after going over and checking things closer tonight i have decided to rebuild the shocks and put the original tower on the front so i can put the brace on.
question? are there shocks available that i can walk in my hobby shop and buy and/or a rebuild kit? 2 of the collar are broke and no compression.
thanks in advance

Re: new guy with junior 2
Yes, Losi still makes the spring clamps and retainers new. The cartridges are now a shorter 2 o-ring design that works perfectly with the older shocks as well. The golds in the front of your ride will probably need a metric 3mm oring to rebuild. (not entirely sure on that one) Then again, the RC10 orings may work too. Your LHS ought to have everything you need.
Oh, and Duratrax makes 2.2" wheels for their BX buggy that have the correct offset for the old X2... Front and rear both fit.

Re: new guy with junior 2
I run at Whitehouse in the summer. Whitehouse hobbies has the clamps and cartridges you look for. They also have whatever tire you need too. Get the part # on the wheels and Brett can get those in for you as well. They are a great group of guys there, send the business their way any chance you get.

The people who run the oval races are different than the guys that own the H.S. I mentioned (to the race directors of the oval) buying a B2 and going with the sprint conversion, and they gave me that funny look you mentioned. I guess in order for you to be competitive with them you need a brand new Custom Works sprint car.
Yeah, $450 later....
Anyway, run whatever you like, don't worry about anything else. You'll be surprised what the old stuff is still capable of doing in the right hands. If you break anything you can't get a hold of anymore, give me a shout. I probably have it.
