jrx2 versus RC10

I say we take a NIB JRX2 Pro and a NIB RC10 Graphite, and drop them off a bridge and see which hits the water first to declare the winner.

I love this thread, takes me back to my youth racing at the track in the local strip mall. When we were all running frogs/grasshopper etc in the street, the RC10 seemed light years ahead.

Once I started racing, at my local track it was all RC10s - I remember folks in the pits filing those gears down for hours on end to make them smooth ,the Jrx-2s sat on the shelf for months....until I bought it. First I had bought a local racer's spare RC10 that was already hopped up, was racing novice doing ok. Once I got the Jrx-2, I quickly got kicked out of novice, and moved to the top of the B main, then A main stock class - when my friend did the same thing, it became appearent that for most newbies, kids & hacks the Jrx2 was the way to go. The RC10 faded out slowly w/ the old timers - Losi's began to dominate, by the time the Pro-SE came around it was almost all Losi, may have had more to do w/ the local "fast guys" all switching vs. one car being a lot better than the other.

Our track was a large outdoor track with big jumps, that would get heavily rutted out after a heavy day of racing - not sure if that factored into the success of the Losis.

Maybe if not for the fact that at least 90%, either in premise or historical fact, of what you said in the first post that you used as a basis for starting this thread was WRONG chances are you wouldn't have been called on it. Dumb was probably puttng it nicely.


In the greater scheme of it all, while the original goldtub RC10 stayed the same for quite a few years - and AE was all but responsible for building the aftermarket parts industry by carrying it on its back (so ComposteCraft got into the CF chassis biz, MIP started making early-stealth 3-gear trannys, etc., and too many others to list) - while when Losi got into the game their cars came with all the goodies out of the box (not that they didn't make improvements either).
The point is that these cars have all progressed over time, over ensuing generations, and the competition was good for the hobby.

If you've even seen the original RC10 proto it all but had Frog front suspension on it. Does that mean that the RC10 was born from the early Tamiya cars? No, it's just that one company's design promoted thinking outside the box and helped the hobby grow as others jumped into the game.

RER40, we've had this discussion many times on this board and I think that your response has been one of the best yet. I think it's easy for us to get into "my brand is better" Ford vs Chevy type of debate and to be honest it can be fun to do that from time to time. But, those are just chest thumping arguments and don't really get us anywhere, or create any better understanding of the history of our hobby. I know there are plenty of younger members who weren't around back in the day that don't understand this evolution, it's good to get an intelligent response to this discussion every now and then. Each car that has come along owes it's existence to the cars that were here before it, this includes the RC10. It's not like on the 8th day God parted the clouds, pointed at the ground and said "Let there be gold pans!" and bang, there were herds of them roaming the plains waiting for us r/c nerds to corral them on to tracks and race them.

As for xanadu, you gotta respect him for sticking to his guns. He said he wasn't coming back, and it looks like he hasn't. Oh well.

I guess the "Ford v. Chevy" argument is one I've never understood. But that's just brand-whoring IMHO.
As a racer, I don't care what it says on the hood ornament as long as it's fast(er).

I guess being older than dirt, and that my memory isn't totally gone yet, that I remember when everyone was running plastic c-r-a-p and a double-jump hadn't yet been invented (but wouldn't have even been contempated as do-able for fear of a pile of broken parts). I remember when the provebial seas parted and God made a goldtub and said all was good -- and I remember all the Frog-k-teers pitching an absolute fit, calling it unfair, and declaring their atheism from then on (as they snuck down to the hobby shop and punked down a Hamiton on an AE kit). I remember half of everyone melting down the diffs in their original JRX2 tranny's, and I remember Losi fixing it with a bearing. I remember everyone going ga-ga over carbon fiber anything. I remember half of us bolting long shocks on the front of their buggies (and the idea being abandoned as quickly as it was accepted). I remember all of us bolting Bigfoot rims and truck bodies to our RC10s and JRX2s and going stadium truck racing (and the Blackfoot boys again crying foul). I remember Schumaker "inventing" the pinspike rear tire, and everyone having to have a set (and if you didn't you were last that night at the track). And I remember the first TPS Slipper Clutch fixing the Losi tranny and turning the car finally into a goldtub killer (till AE copied the MIP 3-gear and "supposedly" inventing the Stealth, the only thing stealth about it was how stealthy they stole it, and added a slipper).
Is everyone running an electric car or truck today paying homage to Team PitStop for inventing a Slipper Clutch?? (of anything, that was perhaps the biggest innovation of its time)
NO, and they shouldn't.

What did all of it do?
It helped make RC better. It helped the evolution of RC cars and trucks. It helped make it do-able for the average guy. And it's kept it alive until today.
And, unlike video games (as a comparison), all those cars back then (regardless of brand) are still so good today that we're not only talking about them still. But you guys that have them are actually running and racing them (btw, I'm so jealous).

i remember a couple years ago my kid found my old atari in my parents basement. i think he was 10 or 11 at the time. he wanted to try it out, so i hooked it up to an old tv in their basement. i think he was playing asteroids...... and his score was getting up there pretty good. after awhile, he wanted to go outside and play and asked how to save his game.

kids have it too good nowadays.

When was the last time you heard someone digging out their old Atari and plugging "Pong" into the console?

i remember a couple years ago my kid found my old atari in my parents basement. i think he was 10 or 11 at the time. he wanted to try it out, so i hooked it up to an old tv in their basement. i think he was playing asteroids...... and his score was getting up there pretty good. after awhile, he wanted to go outside and play and asked how to save his game.

I have a Playstation 3, but play my original Nintendo more(Super Sprint mostly). I found a Radio Shack Pong game at my parents, but the video cable was bad. You could hear it though...

I never was a huge video game player, but I did like the old school games better than what's offered now. Asteroids, Pac Man, Frogger, Donkey Kong, Mario Bros, etc. I think they were more fun, maybe because they were more simple. I just found this a few weeks ago, it's the best video game I've seen in years. It's Asteroids, but with a Van Halen theme. I think I had to play 3 or 4 games before I stopped giggling the whole time:

I downloaded excitebike last night. my wife thinks I am nuts, but I love that game. We have been having a heated Dr Mario contest, the wife has finally cought on and is doing quite well now. The Wii is awesome, I can see myself downloading lots more games for it via the wifi connection.

They came up from the sand man. Evolved from simpler r/c's that swam in the oceans. It was a slow process, but as soon as they developed rubber tires and shock absorbers they were able to successfully live on land.
