Got me a MADCAP!

Post by THE H.P FREAK »

HI!... Got this Tamiya MADCAP off of Ebay. I'll be restoring this one to out of box condition. It will get full ball bearings though.

I'm not sure why, but I have always had a soft spot for this car. I just think that it looks really really cool. Nice pick up.

Would you please measure the wheel base and the front to rear shocktower spacing of the MadCap? I'm thinking about using the body for a different application and I don't have one to measure.

Also, tell me how you like the Bluegroove MadCap body ... there are still originals out there, but Bluegroove is a bargain in comparison.

Maybe you meant to post a picture of a different decal set? These don't look like the MadCap's!!

HI!... The wheel base is 10-3/4 inch long. Between the front/rear shock towers is roughly 8-1/2 inches. And ya I posted the wrong pic. I'm still waiting on the company I get decals from to make the ones for the Madcap. Apparently their machine is not set-up for silver. The owner told me they should have them ready in less than a month.

Cool.

Well, let me know how you like the decals when you get them ... the white decals that go on the black wheels are the ones that most of the repro people are not making effectively. Obviously, you need to print on clear vinyl in order to make those little white letter for the wheels, and a couple of people are substituting black lettering, which looks great on eBay but obviously won't look too great on black wheels (!).

Thanks for the measurements. That was fast!

they need an alps or alpine printer (if i have the name correctly) its one of the only printers to actualy print white.

HI!... The windshield is all foggy and scratched up. There are little tears everywhere and the decals are not put on right and are peeling.

HI!... Got the "MADCAP" body painted. Didn't turn out as I would of liked. Used NIP masking tape designed for painted. Dam paint bled under it and through it in a few spots. Even though I went over it with my thumbnail and pressed it down good. I believe the decals will cover 90% of it. After that I'll probably just touch up the visibly spots.

Well ... seeing as you are painting the windows anyway, it might be worth using nitro or brake fluid to remove the paint and starting over.

It is going to be pretty difficult to conceal black bleeding into white, even with all the decals that come with the MadCap.

There is so little to paint, and there is so little to do to restore the rest of the car ... maybe using some liquid mask would be the way to go?

Pretty frustrating, I imagine. I'm guessing that you were using a spray can?

I don't know if maybe you're trying to rush through too many projects at once. Don't let the quality suffer for the quantity.
Completed projects: CYANide Onroad Optima | Zebra Gold Optima | Barney Optima | OptiMutt RWD Mid
Gallery - Coel's Stalls: Marui Galaxy & Shogun Resto-Mods | FrankenBuff AYK Buffalo | 1987 Buick GNX RC12L3

HI!... I tried brake fluid, nitro fuel and paint remover before I painted the white. None of it would even touch the black over spray. The Pactra body paint seems to penetrate the lexan.
