How fast is a stock RTR Losi mini 8ight?

Post by RC104ever »

I'm curious because online the stories are conflicting. But here's the real question - is it going to be faster than an RC10 gold pan running lipo and a Castle 5700 brushless? My guess is that its not going to be faster but with 4wd, it would be tough to keep up with it. His wife asked me for advice and I sent her to a LHS and this is what they recommended (at least it wasn't a Slash or something). She did mention in her message that the batteries were 'expensive' so I'm wondering if she also bought a lipo for it.

Only reason I'm asking is my neighbour is getting one and I'm sure at some point he'll want to race me. I know I have my B44 with the 7700kv Castle brushless in it that would easily beat him down but still will be interesting and fun I think.

Anyways, the competitive juices are flowing already - I really want to race this year so I'm definitely going to hit the track this year for the first time ever

In stock form I am not to sure, but with upgrades the Mini is super fast.

Check some videos online and see what I am saying, your 7700 might be close to a fully sprung Mini 8ight.

I have a smaller 1/18th scale "truck" that is brushless and the zero to top end is amazing. Look for some videos and you will have your answer.

I know that I had an RC18 on 3S with a Castle CM26 motor in it and it was ALMOST as fast as the RC10 on 2S with a 5700. So I figure the mini 8ight with a stock nimh battery and the smaller motor might still be sort of quick but wont be as fast as mine. At least I hope not!

Should be interesting.

A stock mini 8ight is pretty quick, but unless your buggy is geared really steep, it won't have a higher top speed. They're somewhat heavy for their size at about 2-1/2 pounds with battery, and the stock power system is an 18A ESC and a 4500KV 2 pole 280 series 24x35mm motor.

Modified, however, is a whole 'nother ball game. I stuck a Velineon 28x45mm 380 motor and a 70A 1/10ESC in my mini 8ight, and the thing is stupid quick even on 2S. It's actually faster than my XXX4 with a 120A ESC and 8.5T LRP motor. Won't outrun my 4S powered 1/8 scales, though.

Thanks - my son actually raced him last weekend and laid the smack down pretty hard

It was pretty interesting - I figured the Losi would be faster off the line because of the all wheel drive but the RC10 was still faster.

But now I know he's thinking of modding it so I guess we'll see what happens.

Well, if you're running on a surface where the RWD buggy can get traction, that 4 pole 540 motor in a 4 pound car provides a higher power-to-weight ratio than the 280 motor in the 2.5 lb buggy. Loose surfaces are another story, though; my mini 8ight and other 4WD 1/16 buggies get around a lot better than the RC10 buggies or trucks on my silty home track.

Yeah......if he sticks a 380 motor in it, watch out. They'll just barely fit with slight clearancing of the top brace, but a motor like the Velineon I used puts the mini 8ight at a whole new level. IMO, the 24x35mm motors are better suited to <2 lb 1/16 scale kits. And 20x30mm is for 1/18.

Well we were just racing on our street so there was no problem with traction. But I'm not really too worried - if he tries to up the ante with his car, I will whip out the B44 with my 7700 kv motor and lay the AE smack down again
