more vintage kyosho vintage hopups and mods - 4x4 scorpion!!
Here are some more vintage factory mods and designs associated with the scorpion - mono shock setup and a 4x4 scorpion?? way cool! In TIME TUNNEL, someone has done a similar job (used RC10 type - MIP ball diff for front)

Those are Kyosho Beetle and Assault wheels, although only the rears are slotted, the fronts are 5 spoked. Part numbers are SC-48 and SC-49olblueyez wrote:Oh man, where can I get some of those yellow slot wheels?
Re: more vintage kyosho vintage hopups and mods - 4x4 scorpi
Yeah, the rear slots are neat, I had 2 sets (front anf rears), sold one set and am keeping one just for the hack of it, I prefer alloy to plastic but the scale and realism of the yellow slots have takn me off my feet
I like the hot rod/gasser type wheel/tire setups. big fat ones at the back and thin low profile ones on the fronts, thats how 2WD/RWD setups are.
If interested in slots take a look at GEARHEAD 1.55" slot wheels, these are the next BEST thing. I have them on mine
After a bit of machining they look the part.
There was a buggy in one of these Japanese sites where they had aluminum gear covers (must be a rare one) and in another - FRONT ALLOY 5 SLOTTED wheel, I can't seem to find it now, real neat. They rally made beautiful stuff back in the days.

What exactly did you have to machine on these to make them fit?
Re: more vintage kyosho vintage hopups and mods - 4x4 scorpi
HOTRODVW- These are 1.55" so the dia is perfect, the tires fit over well but the wheels are not wide enough so they kinda pinch at the tire on the inner ring. What I did was to remove the extra step rings on the lip of the wheel (if you know what I mean, compare this pic with the gearhead pic fro their site, you will know what I mean. I also machined off the excess aluminum inside.
Lately I had done what I had wanted to do initially, I split the alloy wheels in half to act the original 2-piece wheels. Now I can use the black tire ring insert, slap these 2 halves and actually use the same 6 hex screws to secure in place! They are not narrow anymore since they are split, now there is a 1/4 gap.
I also changed the screws, got black ones, machined down the heads a little, heated and dipped in oil to give it that black finish.

I would love some pics if you're willing. I just ordered these wheels, be here today. I'm sure it'll all become clear when they show up. Thanks! Erici
Re: more vintage kyosho vintage hopups and mods - 4x4 scorpi
I have pictures, will load them up on fickr with a load of other mods I did so you can see what I did. splitting the wheels in half was EASY, It took a lot of will power just to do it, I cut it with a hacksaw small blade with the wheel spinning in the lathe. Before you cut, you better calculate where the cut has to be made, I did measurements using veriner.

Re: more vintage kyosho vintage hopups and mods - 4x4 scorpi
Understood... I have a lathe, tools a plenty. I'll check it out well this weekend. Thanks
Re: more vintage kyosho vintage hopups and mods - 4x4 scorpi
crap, I think I have lost the right location to cut from, will need to measure again and calculate when I get another possible set. I bought the 4 pcs and kept 2 and sold the other 2 to my friend as I had only needed one pair. These are VERY WELL machined, I'd much prefer the original beetle rear slotted deisgn with the smaller jellybean slots, wish Pargu will do them from alloy! So far I don't want to buy the these again as I want my rides to look unque, might get the beetle re-re 2014 chrome rears for other builds, I love slotted rims

I'm not as particular. I'm running the stock kit tires, and Sand Scorcher Paddles too. I just needed another pair I figured I may as well get bead locks.

Re: more vintage kyosho vintage hopups and mods - 4x4 scorpi
understood, you got the 1.55" right, these are not beadlocks, but yeah if you mean these are crawler wheels, then I get what you saying.
The SRB paddles asre great, very scale like appearance. will fit with some mod as they are 1.5" inner dia

So, how did you make the hex adapters? I have some to play with, just haven't started on them yet.
