Slotcarrod's Cliff Lett 91 Worlds Team Moo Build

This is my 91 Worlds Cliff Lett Build

Sadly, Cliff Lett (The 91 Worlds winner of 4WD) was not able to make the 2WD A-Main due to some controversy. I will post the story later when I hear first hand from Cliff. Cliff Lett was one of the quickest drivers during the 91 Worlds, but there is little video or pictures of his 91 worlds car. So from two poor photos and some poor pit video footage, I will try to make a copy of his car.

Thanks to Niki and Jake, we can enjoy the car that AE never decided to produce. You can buy the conversion here: http://www.rc10talk.com/viewtopic.php?f=99&t=36418

I also recommend a donor white plastic RC10T, as you will need the transmission, shocks, most of the hinge pins, the bellcrank servo saver hardware, ballends, front aluminium axle from the later team version, bulkhead, battery box x 2, along with much of the other hardware.

Showing the assembled suspension. The parts we dyed using boiling tea until the correct tone is reached . The steering was kept bright white. The Lunsford retro turnbuckles can still be purchased direct from Lunsford as well as Ti hinge pins but I have yet to get mine.

The center bellcrank turnbuckle calls for a 1 inch but very few threads are holding the ball cup on, so I suggest a longer turnbuckle. EDIT: 1 inch is perfect with Bellcrank link = 38.5mm centre of ball cup to centre of ball cup.

I am just using rere ballcups and they look great, but a trick that I have never seen posted on how to put small ballcups on turnbuckles, is to use the HPI 4 way wrench. It has a ballcup holder on one side and makes it easy to install without marring the cup with a pair of pliers.

Those arms look pretty nice. I use the same method for installing links and ball ends too. It works pretty slick. :D

Modifying the rear bulkhead to Masami spec took quite a bit of careful cutting and grinding with a Dremel, but Cliff had a different cut than Masami.

Shown is a Masami cut rere bulkhead and a badly cut original that will make a perfect candidate for a Cliff version.

I had no idea you were going this hardcore with this build Rod, but knowing you, I should have known better. Detail, detail, detail... you are off to a great start apparently. The dye job looks the part.

I hope you can at least get 2 perspective on the body so it would be relatively easy to replicate.

Niki and Jake, I can't wait to order my set someday!

Very cool build... I was thinking that this car would be an awesome one to create.

Really interested in the story why he wasn't in the A main too.

Thank you guys.

You all know Marlo and I have a man crush on Cliff Lett, so it was only natural for me to do his car. Cliff should have been in the A-Main of 2WD. The story goes like this:

We have all watched the 91 Worlds video's and seen the wicked "surfs up" or Whoops section. During practice a few drivers were short coursing a section and using part of the grass. So for qualifying, the IFMAR officials said they would dock your fastest time if you used this section. In one of the qualifiers Cliff got squirrely in the surfs up and hit the grass briefly. The IFMAR officials all noticed this and saw that it did not give him any advantage and it was just a racing incident. However a certain "TEAM" complained to the officials and they were pressured to dock the time from his fastest qually. His time would have placed him third on the A main grid. He was never able to recover and only got in the B main. Cliff Lett at the time was the shoo in for 2wd. He had just 2 days before become 4wd world champion, and had been winning and TQ'ing races all year. Who knows what the outcome would have been if that "TEAM" had not protested.

Another interesting story during that event. Cliff almost did not make the 4wd main and become world champion. He was being a nice guy signing autographs, and was late to corner marshal. IFMAR docked his fastest time. The problem was the track had deteriorated and there was only one good qualifying rocket round, but Cliff pulled a rabbit out of his hat and was the ONLY one to qualify out side of the rocket round. Because of this IFMAR decided to allow track maintenance during each 2wd round to give other drivers a chance. Good call!

Anthony, I have enough shots of the body to get a good replica. 8)

So… let's address the elephant in the room…

Will you be running a "no copies" sticker on the roof?

I'm sorry Cliff, but if you are reading this somehow, that's the worst paint job I'm going to have to "copy" :P

Oh yeah, I'm doing a team moo scheme, never mind Cliff.

Thats Rick Vehlow's white/red flame steath that Cliff Lett is holding with the "no copies" sticker on the top. Lett's car had his familier blue/large orange strip with yellow edge stripping/white front with "moo".
