My Yokomo YZ-10 Project. Just getting started!
First post here so let me introduce myself.
My name is Chris and I'm from Minnesota. You could say I've taken a hiatus from the RC hobby as it's gotta be 20 years since I've touched an RC car when I was in junior high school. My first car was a Traxxas Hawk truck that I had fun with at the local track and just ran around in the street with it. I had a bunch of friends that had gotten into RC cars and one of them had a Yokomo YZ-10 or 870c model. I was eventually able to buy that car from him back then as I was in love with it! At some point, I must have grown "too old" to be playing with RC cars as everything went into boxes in my parents basement. I know my dad had asked me many times over the years what we should do with the RC stuff and I'm sure I answered I don't know, or give it away, or it's probably worth something, or put it on EBay but we never did.
So while I was visiting for Thanksgiving this year, I decided to go see what I had and the intent was to sell it. So I started doing some internet searches and discovered this whole world of vintage RC and vintage RC racing. Well that changed my plans to doing a full restoration on this car. I definitely have an emotional attachment to it since I wanted it so bad as a kid and finally got it! I'm so happy I never got rid of it.
It's not totally original as it has some RPM parts on it, battery straps, a top deck, and different shocks although I do have the original shocks. Glad I saved those!
I also have the original assembly manual and the original parts list with part numbers.
The right front suspension arm is broken and I'll need to get that replaced.
I think the plan right now is to clean it up best I can, and then start accumulating NIP parts to totally rebuild it.
Then I'll have a brand new car and another one I can drive.
Looking forward to this project! I've already spent weeks cruising the forum here trying to pick up all the tips and tricks.
I've got some photos to upload but I think they need to be resized first.

Welcome to the board. Cool backstory and luck that you decided not to sell it those times . You can try photobucket.com for your pix. Its easy and they do the resizing for you. Lookin forward to some pix.

Original Shocks and some spare rims that I'll have to strip and clean up.

That's a nice rig you have there. I'd recommend a complete strip down and use an ultrasonic cleaner to clean parts. Buy a new screw kit. The rims need a good clean...can be difficult to find the right rims for this model.

I'll get the rims cleaned up. If you look carefully though, I only have 3 pink rims under that paint so I'll still have to hunt down 1 more pink rim.klavy69 wrote:great timecapsule you have there. PLEASE clean up those pink rims too .
Any suggestions as to stripping the paint?
I uploaded the photos to Imageshack via my iPad. Didn't realize how big they were until I got on a desktop computer.klavy69 wrote:Another question is how the crap did you get pix that big loaded up here
I then found out Imageshack wants to charge me monthly now to host photos so I switched over to Photobucket
and have resized them to be more appropriate.

Re: My Yokomo YZ-10 Project. Just getting started!
I mentioned earlier that I've been reading a lot on the message boards here about Yokomos and looking at all the great threads, information, and photos.
Also been looking alot at Ebay trying to source parts and get an understanding of whats available and whats not and at what cost.
As soon as I contribute a little more here, I'll get access to the Buy-Sell-Trade Forum and I think that will be helpful as well.
So in my searching, I did a local search on Craigslist and stumbled upon a guy selling 2 Yokomos. One is an MX-4 that is in pieces and the other is a complete MR4-BC.
I thought hard about this for a little while and contacted the seller and we made a deal. So now my one project just turned into 3 projects. LOL!
Here's the new Yokomos:
The MR4-BC is ready to run. I'll probably clean it up and leave it alone.
Other than some roadrash to the bottom of the chassis and suspension arms, it looks pretty new to me.
I've dug into the MX-4 a little and it appears that the parts are all there.
It looks like it wrecked hard at some point as the front shock tower is cracked, the front bulkhead had been replaced,
and a few of the suspension arm pins are bent. So far I'll be needing new suspension arm pins, a screw kit, and new
ball bearings (missing a couple of those).
I guess the guy I got these from bought the MX-4 off of EBay a number of years ago.
It was in pieces at the time and he never got around to doing anything with it.
Anyway... pretty excited about these projects now too!

WElcome and nice projects. Glad someone here got the mr4bc and mx-4 saw them on craigslist and not enough cash. the price was decent already. glad you got a deal on them.
Check end of line rc in UK. there still have a few mx4 parts floating on there. and usually good pricing.
HAve fun since as you can see the addiction has re started.

Re: My Yokomo YZ-10 Project. Just getting started!
So I've been picking up a few parts here and there to "restore" the MX-4 that I just got.
I placed an order to End of the Line RC for some stuff they have and have ordered a few things off of Ebay as well.
Interesting thing is I was reviewing my PayPal account and noticed one of my payments went to a "Cliff Lett".
I won't post the Ebay users name, and perhaps this is common knowledge amongst some in the group here, but that put a smile on my face this morning.
Also does anyone know if the front bulkhead/suspension mount is the same as the one on the MR4-TC?
