RC10T2 Gearing Question

Post by BigCountry »

Hello! I am getting back into the R/C world after about 10 years of being away. I am restoring my old T2 and I have purchased the Castle Creations 3800kv motor ESC combo and I am wondering what a range of gearing would be appropriate as to not overheat it. I have an 87T Spur gear (I believe that is what they are called). I will be mainly just bashing around in the yard but I will occasionally be going to a local indoor short track to race around. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

Do you have the paperwork for the brushless motor?

It should have a (FDR) final drive ratio for 2wd truck, buggy or onroad, etc.

Spur divided by pinion x gearbox ratio = FDR

Plug in different pinions till you get as close as possible to the final drive ratio.

T2 Stealth gearbox is 2.60 ( fixed, Thank you Scr8p )

Cheers, Dave. :)

He has a T2, so it's a 2.60.

Try a 17 to 19 Tooth pinion.

That will do it right there.

The 17 or less will provide more than enough wheel spin and some get up and go torque.

19 and higher is going to achieve higher wheel speed, check the temps on your motor and speed control, it will get hot.

I run very a very similar setup and my motor is very hot after running one batt pack through it. I have it geared way to high, but the speed is fun.

Hi Guys,

Thank you Scr8p for pointing out that a T2 has a 2.60 gearbox, I copied and pasted the post

verbatim from a 10T post I made.

Team Associated recommends that it is not wise to go lower that a 17 tooth pinion on a stealth trans.

Interesting, No FDR

<----- Impatient  .... If I just waited until the motor came, there is a Gearing Guide in the box for 1/10 scale stadium trucks. It says the proper pinion for 87t spur gear is 14-18. I am thinking I will go up a little to 19-20 to get a little more speed. Thank you all for the information and advice :D

Your T2 is 2.6 to one.
They (motor brand) should never make a statement like that! They are all different! Just the AE stadium trucks alone use 2.25 (10T), 2.4 (T3, T4) and 2.6 (T2 and GT) ratios! (Not sure what the T5 is, I think 2.4?)

So should I always keep my gearing at 2.6 to 1? That seems really low... I am relatively new to changing gears and things so bear with me with some of the questions. I was running a brushed system about 15 years ago with 87/22 setup and it seemed to work fine (I was never the fastest but it worked). The Castle Creations 3800kv motor I got came with a 5mm shaft and it is seemingly difficult to find a 48p pinion with a 5mm bore (LHS doesn't have any). I know I could order them online but I didn't want to have to wait. Is there a way to switch my 48p spur to a 32p spur? Which brand would make one that fits on my T2?

The 2.6 is the internal ratio, the gearing inside the gearbox.
Taking your 87/22 as an example, the overall gear ratio is 87/22 x 2.6 = 10.28:1

The 3800kv motor is around 13 turns, a fairly mild motor, so as said before 18-19 tooth pinion is a good starting point.

As for pinions, the 5mm shaft motors are usually used in 1/8th scale buggies and trucks, or electric conversion of nitro trucks, where bigger gear teeth are used.
Kimbrough make a wide range of 32dp spur gears for nitro trucks, their 60T spur should fit straight on and needs to be matched to a 12T pinion.
Although as you will have to order the spur gear, you might as well get 5mm bore 48dp pinions.

Thank you for the great info! I just thought a motor was a motor and had no idea they had different shaft sizes. Would there be any durability concerns if I were to stay with the 48p gears? It seems as though the 32p has larger teeth and would be less likely to strip.

So I went to the hobby shop today and I got a 60t 32p spur and a 12t 32p pinion. So thank you all for the help in getting me to understand the gearing. My next question is if the internals of the transmission are going to be able to withstand the power of the castle brushless system? Do I need to try and find parts to upgrade the internals?

Your spur and pinion should not be 32 pitch... that won't make the more durable. Your slipper adjustments are what protect the gears from stripping. My T2 is running a Reedy Mach 2 13.5, though I'm not sure of the gearing.

A 60T 32dp is 1.94" in diameter
A 60T 48dp is 1.29" in diameter

I have a 32p 60t spur which is 49.21mm or a 48p 87t spur which is 47.1mm... does 2mm really make any difference?
