RC10B4 Motor/ESC recommendation

Post by roor »

I just got a rc10b4 centro roller and need some electronic recommendations. Something about older buggies, or the cheaper ebay price draws me in. The b3 running a sensorless reedy 3300kv motor makes me happy with its speed on the the tracks but not the motor pauses after rough jumps. I’m pretty sure that’s cuz it’s sensorless and a sensor motor would be a lot smoother on the carpet.

My knowledge of RC stopped about 15ish years ago. Ironically I bought a b4 kit when it first came out. Thats probably another reason I had to bid on one. Seems like a steal of a price! I just need some esc/motor recommendations. Some that popped out are castle creations copperhead esc/motor combo and hobbywing justock sensored combo. These 2 seemed easy enough. Just buy and install and not too expensive.

Going the seperate route is more expensive but will gladly put up some more $ if its a better separated quality products

I’m not sure how much a difference between 17.5 turn and 3300kv and know gearing makes a difference but can that turn count keep up? Seems like on carpet pinions are going up to 30+ teeth count! I’m used to 20s used on dirt buggies.

Thanks for any help!

And who dont like pics? :D

I still plan on tweaking the b3 to run better on the track but bones get annoying to pop back in after the big jump mess ups. This will hopefully feel more track ready.

For the ESC I have both the quickrun and the justock esc's. I can recommend both but for the motors you are running the justock has reverse polarity protection. If you aren't going to be running lower than 13 turn brush-less you won't see much performance difference between them.

I was running the 13.5t reedy motor in my rc10 b1 and it worked just fine. The newer b4 style transmission should have no issues at all. If you are going to be racing you should see if there are track requirements on timing and turns.

That is a nice looking buggy. The centro looks like such an interesting buggy given it's place in time.

Anyone have more info in this crazy looking buggy. I found just this https://site.petitrc.com/setup/associated/setupc4.1/C4.2_PartsList/

I think I’m going to narrow it down to the onisiki 13.5 for if I wanna do mod and the reedy spec. The only thing I don’t like about the reedy is it says it can only handle 1-2s. I guess not a big deal since 3s doesn’t seem big for competition. Track rules, NO 3s. Period. :/

Probably gonna pairing it with the castle creations sidewinder.

Anyone know how these things were? Is it still competitive? Seems like it should given its mid motor for carpet. I’m hoping in a year I’m not on eBay looking for a used b5 or b6. Still think it was a steal at $200. Obviously I don’t have problems bashing with old vintage stuff :D

I run hobbywing justock and 17.5 reedy S+ motor in my b6.3d and hobbywing justock and 13.5 reedy S+ in my b74.1d and they work great.

If you are running in specific classes, they will dictate what kind of motor you will run. And yes, 1/10 scale 2s is plenty.

I'll say for 17.5 blinky class, I'm loving the reedy s+ motor. It's gots tons of power, plenty to allow you to create some decent damage if you crash.
As for esc, I have a couple of turnigy trackstar ones that work great, and I've scored a few used tekin rs controllers that work great.

I hear nothing but good things about the hobbywing escs also.

Space might be limited if you are running saddle packs.

Check the footprint size of the ESC's and the wiring layout. A low profile servo will help.

Maybe do a mock-up with a spare servo, receiver etc to see how space is and where wiring will go.

Blue would look good in that buggy.

Thanks for all these tips! time to get a ruler and paper to mock up space requirements. I am a bit hesitant at least with cheaper hobbywing esc. I have heard reviews of them being good enough for 90% of people, to other reviews saying cheap and upgrade to something better. I'd rather buy once cry once, but damn for a "simple" blinky roar approved esc is kind of a lot. I can definitely look at used eBay. The justock combo is tempting! If anything maybe paired the ESC with the reedy sonic 17.5. I then looked up the roar list and made my way to this guy https://r1wurks.com/products/r1-super-stock-digital-3-esc-040013-pre-order-now?variant=29212930343006 and this https://www.amainhobbies.com/tekin-rs-gen3-spec-sensored-brushless-esc-tektt1157/p972038

seems to fit my list of stuff with good features and just at the end of my budget but again ebay has been my friend to try and keep cost down on the ESC. The motor I want new. It shall only know my recklessness

The carpet buggy racing bug bit me HARD. I am hooked but have little to no time to make it to the track for awhile. In the mean time I just look and drool over all the nice new advancements since the last 15 years.
