1986 Mardave Meteor

I notice there has only ever been one Meteor entered into BOTM, and that was by DerbyDan in 2016 (getting the win). This was my first official race car, bought in very early 1987 for indoor carpet racing at Perry Common Buggy Club, UK. This was touted as a budget racer (£49.99) that could be tuned to be competitive, and there were immediate tuning articles produced by racer Greg Halliday to this effect. He campaigned his car in the Radio Race Car national series, doing pretty well. Being so light, simple and with a really low COG, it was always going to prove popular, especially at club level. My car is very much based around his first article with lots of Halliday mods being caried out by my father. It has a hand-made lwb chassis and radio plate, rear motor mount support/heatsink, front anti-roll bar, bumper and ball-raced intermediate gear all worked on by my father. He also machined the alloy wheels for it. The slightly lengthened chassis was not as long as the later official lwb chassis which Mardave introduced, but was merely to allow the battery to be mounted longitudinally. This car recorded the fastest speed of any of my cars on our Shinwa rolling road when in ‘race trim’ (i.e. when geared to last a full 5minute race) using a Reedy Silver Dot. The upside-down shock fitment was a standard Meteor thing… they did leak but they also filled from the bottom so when installed like this they could be topped up between races in situ if really needed. Electrics include my original Futaba FP-R102GR receiver and boggo FP-S128 servo which came with my ‘Attack’ transmitter, and a period Demon ProKing ESC. Motor is a beautiful Demon which always suited the red detailing of the Meteor. The early cars had the much rarer red ball cups, as shown on my car… later being all black. I stupidly sold this car when my racing became more serious – a school friend and fellow racer bought it. 3 decades later I tracked him down on the Book of Face and sure enough he still had it tucked away in his loft and let me have it back for free. The basic ABS shell was the first one I ever sprayed and thankfully the matt black paint with red detailing had survived. One of my most cherished cars, and one I won plenty of trophies with during my early racing days.

For lots more pictures detailing from when I received it back to now, please see the following thread :-

Those are really interesting tires, sort of like the Mr. T mohawk of tires. The center looks like a Proline Trencher pattern.
