Build problem Turbo Optima re-release / Slipper Clutch

Post by torben973 »

Dear all,

I have a build problem with the Turbo Optima rerelease.

As long as I don't put the spring and the nut for the slipper clutch
the spur gear can be turned without any effort and the transmission
runs super smooth.

As soon as I apply the spring and the nut for the slipper clutch
the spur gear gets very tight to turn.

I think the inner pad of the slipper clutch gets pressed against the chassis
when applying the spring and the nut.

I also added an extra washer before the inner slipper clutch to prevent this
and it gets much better like this.
But still when I put the spring and the nut on it get's significantly harder
to turn the spur gear by hand.

Is it normal? What could I have done wrong?

Regards, Torben

Is there any chance you forgot the spacer or even one of the bearings inside the trans?

Hi GoMachV,

thanks for your reply.
I just opened the transmission case and double checked that OT225b is in.

I am getting mad.
From the picture attached you can see that the second OT225b spacer that I put on the axle with the gear is going too far in or is too short.
It should stick out further to prevent the slipper pads touching the chassis.
You can even see markings from the pad having touched the chassis already.

Is there any outside bearing missing that makes that second OT225b stick out a little bit further? I don't have any left over. There is nothing in the manual.

Now it is getting completely weird: If I stick the axle with the spur gear in from the other side it would be the perfect gap between chassis and
slipper pads. But that's definately wrong. I can't flip the chassis halves.

I am close to giving up this build.

Regards, Torben

I confirm the plate should be flushed. Check the side of your gearbox to see if there is nothing preventing the plate to get deeper...

Almost flush.

But the metal is thicker than the recess on the plastic side...

Anyway.. let's consider the side with the spur gear solved. I can use an extra small washer there and then it works
like intened. Spinning completely without friction then.

BUT:
Let's go to the other side.
There is a silver spacer, a spring and the nut.
As soon as I put those on the gear is spinnable but by far not as smooth anymore.
Seems like the spring is pushing the silver spacer against the transmission housing.
Is that normal or shall the gear still spin without any notable friction even with the spring and nut mounted?

Do you realize any difference then?

The silver spacer is pushed against the transmission case by the spring causing the friction.

The red marked part of the spacer is too thin. The yellow marked part is pushed against the transmission housing.
I don't know, something is really off here.
Difficult to find an extra spacer in the size
of the red part of the silver spacer to make the red marked part a little longer. If the red part would be longer it would work
as intended I think. Then the yellow marked part would have some gap to the transmission case.

Really not sure if I am too stupid to make this build.

Meanwhile I have extra washers on both sides to make it somehow work.
But this build is not satisfying. Wonder what is wrong here.
Everybody is praising Kyosho quality.

Where is the bearing? I'm not seeing it in this pic. Inside the housing it should be in the protrusion, and I see no silver there. Maybe the angle isn't quite enough, but I would expect to be able to see it here.

It's there.
Sitting a little bit back because it is installed from the inside.

Guys - I did one last try... disassembled everything... started over from scratch..

I would say I did everything exactly the same. No extra parts, no partsd left over...

What can I say... fits without extra washers on both sides now.... :D :D :D

THANKS FOR YOUR PATIENCE AND KIND HELP!!!

Most prob will never find out what it was???

Regards, Torben

Case closed.

Yeah that's just bizarre. I've built several and can't imagine what in the world it would have been but glad you got it sorted
