in 1991 Tamiya attempted to capitalize on some scaled down value with the 1/14 2wd electric Clod Buster QD. Based on Tamiya's Quick Drive Truck type chassis, underneath the Clod was the same drivetrain and suspension as the previously released Midnight Pumpkin QD. The entire line of QD cars originated with the 1988 Thundershot QD buggy as Tamiya introduced their line of model grade products to toy grade buyers. Just like it's Pumpkin predecessor the Clod was built from a two-piece molded clamshell chassis suspended by undampened sliding pillar coilovers spring at each corner over a pair of central pivoting sold axles. Z-bend tie rods connected to a direct mounted servo saver up front and a 280 powered selectable two speed gearbox drove things out back. The PCB speed controller and receiver with interchangeable crystals for the fully proportional pistol grip transmitter were hidden inside the chassis above the bottom loading 8 AA battery bay. The bright red molded plastic Chevrolet truck body towered over the chevron style All Traction Utility rubber tires on single piece white plastic wheels. A chrome grille, bumper, hood scoop, and side pipes, complimented the white roll bar and black brush guards front and rear of the predominantly assembled kit.
Also pictured were the Manta Ray QD and Ferrari F40 QD:
Manta Ray QD: 1/14 2wd electric off-road buggy released in 1991. Built off the buggy type QD chassis, significantly resembled the 1/10 Grasshopper buggy. Two-piece clamshell chassis with tall front shock towers, swing arm from suspension, long undampened sliding pillar coil springs and central pivot solid rear axle with selectable two speed gearing. Rubber pin spike tires, red single piece plastic wheels, molded plastic buggy body, Mabuchi 280 motor, electronic speed controller, and radio system included in the fully assembled and ready to run kit.
Ferrari F40 QD: 1/12 2wd electric on-road car released in 1991. Constructed from the on-road type QD chassis, a modified, longer wheelbase version of the QD buggy. Two-piece clamshell chassis with short front shock towers, swing arm front suspension, short undampened sliding pillar coil springs and central pivot solid rear axle with selectable two speed gearing. Radial tread rubber tires, white five spoke single piece plastic wheels, molded plastic F40 body, Mabushi 280 motor, electronic speed controller, and radio system included in the fully assembled and ready to run kit.

Re: Tamiya Clod Buster QD
A few years ago I bought a boxed QD Clod, Blackfoot and F40. Kind of cool rigs because they were that bridge gap between hobby grade and toy grade. When I was a kid I only ever had toy grade stuff so it was nostalgic for me.
I had a radio Shack truck, Sonic Thunder, which was an Identical copy of the QD Midnight Pumpkin except it didn't have proportional controls.
