modern 2.2" truck tires on vintage 3-piece wheels?

Post by aconsola »

I realized that even with the wide RPM arms my jrx-T is very narrow with modern wheels on it due to the dirrerent wheel offset. Has anyone tried to put something like holeshots or bow-ties with foams onto Vintage Losi 3-piece wheels? Will they fit?

Modern 2.2 truck tires should all fit vintage 2.2 truck wheels.

I think it will be a little tricky to get them true. The Losi JR XT era tires have an internal groove on the bead to fit the inner rim sleeve. I just tried a new Losi taper pin tire on the 3 piece rim and I'm struggling to get it fully seated. Might be able to, maybe, but it's gonna take a little work.

They made 5 spoke 1 piece JR XT rims that should work.

Likewise, it is also difficult to fit those Losi tires on the Associated 3 peice wheels, because of the differences in beads. It can be done, but you may have to trim the beads.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll give it a go and see what happens. I realized that in my obsessive-compulsive buying of all things vintage losi related I bought a set of proline dish wheels that I could use. I'd like to be able to use the 3-piece wheels though so that I can easily recycle the tires onto some AE rims once the meet is over and use them on the GT.

I got my last-minute tower order in today. I picked up one set of jconcepts double-dees and one pair of panther mini-pins(on clearance for $7, I'm a sucker for a sale)
Neither one will fit on the 3-piece rims.
The 3-piece rim needs a step-off on the inside of the bead for the inner ring to sit on. Both the jc and panther tires have radial ribs behind the bead, presumeably to reinforce the bead area. This will not allow the ring to sit flush and even around the bead. I'm sure it could be made to work with some trimming of the ribs, but that is a lot of work.
I glued the doubledees up to a set of vintage proline dish wheels that are spaced for the jrx-T.
Up front I have proline edge tires from my rc10GT on stock AE wheels.
The back-spacing is too narrow, but I have extra long proline truck conversion axles on the front, so I can space the wheels outward with shims/bushings to even them up with the rear track width.

anthony, you could've grabbed a set of hpi super star mt wheels. then you wouldn't have had any backspacing issues. i ran then on my junior-t all the time bitd.
