Graphite VS Tub????

Post by Mad Racer »

Hi All.

I own a well used Graphite and goes very well. Im just curious that does the graphite 10 handles better or worse than the tub that was available at the same time??

From what iv'e been told they were the same. Hard to believe when the main chassis was totaly different in their make up.

Any thoughts.

Thanks.
Mark.

Most of us Associated guys ran the tubs because for whatever reason, the tubs we could dial-in ( tune) quicker and they just seemed to be more consistant with the laptimes. I myself tried quite a few different graphite chassis, both from AE and from Composite Craft ( I was one of the Design Engineers for them) and I could never get any of my graphite cars to work on the track as good as an aluminum tub car.
Personally, I truly believe that suttelties like chassis flex, weight distribution, chassis twist and the slightest difference of hole locations for hardware may have contributed to this. Another thing we noticed was that our front-ends would "push" more with the graphite than with the tub, but again this could be due to differences in the layup of the carbon-fiber panel with regard to the kickup angle, and weight distribution due to the chassis.

I just bought new gold shocks for it. The front are NIP Golds and rear are near new golds. It's so needed of new shocks. They werent that cheap.

I had a Composite Craft chassis for my 10T, and it was 50% lighter than the stock tub (4 ounces to 8 ounces or something, I forget), but it always felt more flexible when I held a built truck. The bare chassis feels more rigid, but when you bolt everything up, with all the weight on each end of the chassis, a long graphite plate flexes more than the tub. Add an upper deck and it gets much more rigid, but then you run into the issue of canceling out some of the weight savings. Whether or not a totally rigid chassis or a slightly more flexible one is better is up to the driver in the end, but obviously the single graphite plate chassis designs only lasted about 3-4 years; Losi's was one of the first in 1988, and they, Associated, Traxxas, and Kyosho had gone to molded plastic or a double-deck chassis by 1992/93 at the latest.

Damned if I was ever a good enough driver to tell the difference LOL

I got one of both, the tub is my first RC10 from the day and the graphite was my dad's of the day, now mine. I always liked his better, but knew I could abuse mine more. Both are shelf queens now and I still like the looks of his more...graphite chassis are so pretty. As far as functionality, I have no clue.

Thanks to all reply's

Its very interesting to read what team drivers thought.

I will post pics when i learn how to.

Its a old clunker runner thats a x vintagracer buggy. It really is my work horse but it never dies. As metioned the shocks are really clapped out so i bought a new set of golds. Has a 13.5 Brushless and modern tires all round.

I have a NB graphite that looks so sweet.

Cheers
