What size allen wrench?

Post by dragnse7en »

Hello all - I'm new here, but have been into rc cars since 1984.

I'm taking apart the 6 gear tranny of an A stamp RC10, and I'm going to replace all the bushings with ball bearings. I tried to use my smallest allen wrench to take the screws out of the idler gears, but even my smallest allen wrench is too big.

What size allen wrench to do I need to get for those small screws?

Idler gears are still available for sale at most hobby shops. Pick up a new set, and they come with the allen wrench.....

Okay - is it still part #6613, or should I need to know a different number to look for?

I found enough of those AE6614s on the internet to buy, and they seem to be much, much cheaper than the 0.035 in (11/32") hex driver that I could find. I couldn't find them as hex keys. That parts bag comes with the tool I need though - that's what counts.

Thanks a million guys!

I think that sk has the 0-80 tap that will help save the wrench and scews , just a SMALL drop of thread lock will keep things together.

Tapping a plastic part? No offense, but that makes zero sense to me. I'm going to get the black idler gears, and rebuild my trans. using the article written by Bob Gagne, and the other one written by Jim Halsey.

spend the money on a good wrench and you don't have to worry about the tiny hexes stripping out using the soft L-keys that come with the idler gears.
also a lot less likely to lose one of these compared to the tiny stock tool
something like this with a ground steel tip:

Yes, I already have a set a hex drivers, but they're metric. I have ordered a standard set, but that set doesn't include an 11/32" driver.

I'm very good with my parts, so I'm not worried about these small screws. I had a micro heli a couple of years back, and their screws were even smaller than the ones used on the idler gears.

Thanks though

give it time and you will snap a screw off. it is anal but it has paid off for me , i had a ball stud shear off in a bulkhead and was able run in a 4-40 screw and get the snapped end out the other side.

The only time I would use a tap for plastic, is if I'm going to use aluminum screws. Using the supplied hex wrench with the new black idler gears will be a once-time thing, so as I said, I'm not worried about it at all.

Sorry to hear about your ball stud mishap :(
