3D printed CAT XLS bumper
I can't fully claim all the credit for this as it was printed by a company in Bristol for me, but it was my CAD model etc....
The bumper on the left is the original. The repro bumper is on the right and needs some radii tweaks but it fits!
What do you think? I just quickly offered it up to an XLS and it fits! Pictures to follow tomorrow.
Regards,
Nick Morgan.

Looks good. Is it white powder dyed black like Shapeways, or solid colour?

Re: 3D printed CAT XLS bumper
It is white powder coloured afterwards, however I have been informed that the next version will be fully black.
The material is ABS P430 and this is the first off prototype to check against the real part and to validate the 3D model.
I have got a few dims incorrect but the next version should be nearer the original part.
Strength wise I will have to give it a go. A run outside with an XLS.... can't wait! I'd rather snap a 3d printed part rather than the almost rare T153 bumper.
Regards,
Nick

Re: 3D printed CAT XLS bumper
I finally have fitted the first off 3D printed part and it fits like a glove...
After the fitment, I noticed that I had got some of the dimensions wrong and so I got out my digital vernier and checked some dimensions.
Next was to model version 2 and this time include a logo.
and from another angle: -
and close up: -
I've also had a pro cat version made too (still to be fitted to a pro cat): -
It's a shortened version of the CAT XLS bumper sharing the same fitment holes etc., so should fit first time.
Now that I have had version 2 of the CAT XLS produced, I shall fit and run the version 1. I have tried bending the new part and it is surprisingly flexible (like the part it is to replace).

Looks interesting.
Have you thought about making an earlier Short Wheel Base CAT grey bumper?
These are really hard to find now.

Re: 3D printed CAT XLS bumper
I've only modelled the cars that I own. In this way I can measure the parts. I have not got an cat swb and so it would have to be from photo's and this would not benefit my collection.
If you have got one that you could dimension up, then I can model it up for you.
I'd love to run my xls again and would only be happy if I could get replacement parts made.
I contacted Schumacher racing to see if they would do a production run of the old bumpers but they were not interested.
So, i went ahead on modelling the whole car collection.
I have modelled cat xls, pro cat, boss cat , cat3000.
Touring car wise: SST 98, SST '99, SST 2000, SST Sport, mission, mi1 (version 1) and Mi4CXL.

Re: 3D printed CAT XLS bumper
I've chatted with Robin Schumacher a number of times about the level of interest in the vintage cars, and the possibility of reproducing, but the problem is they don't have any of the tooling to reproduce old parts, and tooling can be very expensive.
That's where the 3D printing comes into its own, no expensive tooling is required.
Its great to see you using this technology to keep vintage cars on the track!

Re: 3D printed CAT XLS bumper
Sorry, forgot to say, thank you very much for the offer of modelling up the grey bumper.
I might well take you up on it!
It would be really nice to be able to run with an authentic looking grey bumper, but the originals are just way too scarce and fragile!

If you've got a bumper to copy it's easy to reproduce as all it is is a piece of grey kydex that'snpdp72 wrote:Looks interesting.

cut out and bent. There's already repros on ebay for a lot less than getting them 3D printed.

Re: 3D printed CAT XLS bumper
Thanks for the heads up, I'd seen the first couple of these go for quite high prices on ebay, but hadn't looked recently.terry.sc wrote: If you've got a bumper to copy it's easy to reproduce as all it is is a piece of grey kydex that's

I'd also thought about making my own repros but didn't know the material was kydex, so had struggled to find anything suitable when searching for "grey plastic"!

Re: 3D printed CAT XLS bumper
More progress - I've fitted the procat version 1 bumper to a procat: -
I was asked for some T079's for the Schumacher CAT's, CAT XL, CAT XLS by peakey: -
I have had some T079's printed and I have finally got round to getting them fitted. This photo shows the 3D printed part fitted and the original (T079) part by the tyre

Re: 3D printed CAT XLS bumper
Hi, I was reading your post on the T079 parts you've printed off. Do you still sell?
