RC10T Team build from parts bin

Post by cobalta70 »

My son and I needed something to spend some time on so we thought we would build an RC10T from all the best parts in my parts bin.

So far we have found a pretty decent set of white parts, which have all been given a good scrub with Simple Green.

We also dug up a new in package chassis and a decent nose and motor plate.

It's actually many bins, but most of it is not that impressive, this is just the best of the best. :-)

We decided to start with the transmission to get that out of the way.

First up was the diff, which was really not in that good of shape:
    dirty_diff.jpg
After some soaking in the ultrasonic cleaner and some light blasting to the cups with an air eraser we ended up with this:

And the clean diff back together:

The transmission internals all cleaned and ready to go back together:

Spur, slipper and motor plate all ready to be placed on the transmission:

This is going to be one tidy looking truck! Very nice!

Here's a question. I was able to dig up two sets of truck style rear hub carriers. One set is pretty rough, but the other is nice and white. However, the good ones have a hole in them. It's been a while, but I don't remember seeing these with a hole in them.

What vintage are the ones with the hole? Was the hole for a set screw, perhaps to hold in those double wide bushings?

            Here is a pic:

I've never seen a hub with holes like that. If you didn't get them new out of a package I would assume it was done by someone for whatever reason. Just a guess though.

If I was to guess as to why the hubs were drilled, I think someone took the advice from this vintage RCCA tech tip. It's a quick and easy way to clean your bearings.

The hubs were definitely not new when I got them. They would have come in a parts lot that I purchased years ago.

I have not seen the bearing cleaning trick. That very well might have been it.

Thanks for the info. I have started cleaning up the ones without the hole. :-)

Today we took care of the links and the universals.

We cleaned the metal parts in the ultrasonic cleaner. The cups are shown here as we found them.
            dirty_links.jpg
Then the universals and turnbuckles were polished.
              cleaned_links.jpg
And finally the turnbuckles and universals were made black again using cold blueing technique. The cups were cleaned too, and while we were at it, the hubs that don't have a hole in them were cleaned as well. :-)

I was wondering if anyone would notice that. It somehow snuck into the pile of cups, but was spotted and separated before the rest of them went to the cleaner. :-)

This morning we got the links built. Probably my least favorite part of the build.
