TRX-1 from the grave

Looking to resurrect the TRX-1 I used to race when I was a teen. This car has some club race wins on it, as well as a 92' Mountain States Off Road Championship 1st place finish in 2WD Stock A-main. I was a kid back then, and bought one of the first available kits from Bob Stormer with my Paper Route money. I've sourced another car from a guy on E-bay, and after stripping down his and my old car, I'm left with a pile of parts... many of which I wont be re-using because they're the old, brittle white parts. So, cross-referencing and comparing parts from newer kits has become my process... and, I'll post pics along the way. RPM arms, Nitro truck bulkhead, Bandit parts and NOS stuff found on the 'Bay... as well as a TBG body I've just finished painting... And, YES... I plan to race it! Stay Tuned......

I'm learning as I go... Bandit parts arent necessarily a direct fit for the TRX-1/-3 architecture. I tried to put the Bandit front spindle on the caster blocks... no fit. So, off to the good ol 'Bay for a set of Slash caster blocks... also no fit. DREMEL to the rescue! LOL... now, with Bandit spindles on Slash casters at the end of my RPM Bandit arms, and a few alloy spacers to allow "tuning options" for front arm placement (AKA The arm spacing isnt perfect on the TRX-1 arm mounts)... we have an "assembled" front end! LOL... The Saga continues with the rear end and the nitro truck bulkhead that doesnt directly fit the TRX-1 transmission without some spacing up off the chassis...

Yeah... I've been using a lot of those! Only problems are... I have the brand new caster blocks, but finding good wheels to use with the old style axle, where the bearings are captive in the wheel... that's been pretty tough. I actually got some bandit steering blocks and slash caster blocks, and through the magic of a Dremel, have got them *fitting* enough to be useable. at least now I can use the current crop of Bandit wheels, and many other 12mm hex drive wheels. I know it's not TRX-1 O.G. ... but, I'd actually like to be able to take the buggy out on the track and run it... so, using *unobtanium* parts is kindof silly. Now... if you have a line on some steering blocks and some good wheels to fit the original size bearings... I'm all ears!!!

the 1775 front wheels were 2.15" and are around from time to time.

OR, JC racing makes wheels, the traxxas ones say do not fit trx1, which is weird, I don't know why that would be the case, but you could also try the ultima 2wd, either way those sets would have metric bearing seats on the front wheels. maybe the offset is different on the rear wheels.

OR, you could find a set of rc10 front spindles and install them and run rc10/b2/b3 front wheels with standard bearings

The chassis needed a little love... there was a pretty hefty ding in the CF that I filled with a mix of epoxy and CF dust from sanding another old CF piece I had. Got it straight and tidy... then modified some Slash front caster blocks, and put some Bandit spindles and axles so i can use old "pin-style" wheels or put a hex in and use modern 12mm hex wheels. The aluminum steering rack is for a Bandit/Slash, and is still not mounted... trying to figure out a way to mount it on long screws, but with something like a brass/steel/aluminum sleeve so the bearings will ride on it smoothly. The old TRX1 is coming along with it's body and wing done... just a few more random items and it'll be ready for electronics. Otherwise... this is where we're at now!

The track uses a half of the "ice" area of our local ice skating/hockey rink. During the winter, we rent out a conference room in one of our local hotels and build a track there for 2-day events each month.

Here's my front end. Shapeways arms with slash hub carriers and RPM steering knuckles, cut down Rustler axles with 8mm hexes.

For a standard setup the Tamiya DT02 front wheels fit and have the correct offset.

Looks Great!!! Those Slash carriers come in clutch when nothing else works! I've been running the older Bandit style wheels... love the dish, and the fact that they still use the pin-style axles. Also love that you have some nice blue hardware in there. I went with as much black allen hardware as possible, as well as swapping the shocks for the full hard anodized. Similar to the LS2 and TCP.
