New Brushed ESC (Hobbywing 1080) vs say an Old Novak?

Curious what people think about an old Novak versus say a standard Hobbywing 1080. In reality is the 1080 just a better option if vintage aesthetics do not matter and one is trying to make a reliable brushed runner?

The 1080 has programmable levels of drag brake and LIPO cutoff so I suppose advantage right there?

I've got a nice stable of Novaks for brushed motors. I don't really miss the lack of programmings with brushed motors.

Personally I'd go the Novak's over the 1080, the only drawback is the lack of a lipo cut off.

For what it's worth, the Hobbywing 1080 amp rating is higher than any old Novak that I know of (but I'm not Jesus and do not know all). Even though a Novak has roughly 101% more cool factor than the HW 1080, I don't see why not to run the HW 1080 if the vintage factor doesn't matter and just want a reliable runner. The HW 1080 programming is honestly super simple.

For a brushed basher where you'd like to push the limit and/or run it hard or long run time, I absolutely would prefer to run the HW 1080 over a vintage Novak. Simply because I would not care if the HW 1080 ended up toasted. It would much upset me if I were to toast an vintage Novak. I have a stash of HW 1080's specifically for this reason.

The super rooster 2 I have is the smoothest brushed esc I've ever used but although all my brushed cars are runner's I don't see them as expendable bashers , if I want an expendable basher I'd just go brushless and be done with it .

Honestly, I glad that quality brushed esc's are still available.

On top of the programming, I also like the small footprint of the Hobbywing. Many vintage reversing esc's are just plain huge, at least the good ones are.

The crawler scene has kept lots of new brushed motors alive as well for cheap. I don't know how say one of the various 27T options available for like $13 like Hakmoto would compare to an old Reedy 27T stock motor or something, but I suspect given the new magnets and such probably better these days and at the price point they are disposable.
