XXCR Kinwald cvd's

Post by Toyotachris1982 »

So I have a question regarding which cvd's are overall better with the Kinwald XXCR? I have both sets of steel cvds (from a earlier Kinwald) and the aluminum cvd's (from the later Kinwald) which are better i understand the aluminum is lighter and less rotating mass and likely are weaker than the steel but which set would be advised to be used?

If you're running stock brushed I'd say aluminum, mod brushed or brushless would wear the aluminum ones fairly quickly. Unless you can get your hands on aluminum replacements you might want to use them sparingly.

I didn’t realise any KE came with alloy?

You can retrofit the alloy (bluish colour) which was option on the 4wd cars (it is identical length) quite easily, and a good option for the shelf as it won’t rust. Also perfectly fine for stock motors.

My kinwald is a quite late one (grey shocks not black) and definitely came with black steel MIP drive shafts.

The XX BK never came with Aluminum CVDs.

MIP made multiple versions of Aluminum CVDs that fit the XX. The XX, XX4, XXX, and XXX4 all used the same rear pivot and arms. They share the same CVD length.

The later versions are much beefier. The shaft is thicker and so is the sphere.

I've only seen a few Aluminum CVDs that wore badly, and they were still very usable in a basher.

Aluminum CVDs and XX4 Composite Diff out drives are the lightest and least mass. You can push the steel pin out of the CVD dogbone and replace it with Weed Trimmer line. This will keep the steel pin from destroying your composite diff out drives and also drop the mass further. I've been running this setup in my Super XXT Runner.

On a runner, if more than a stock motor - steel for sure.

So from a rarity standpoint are the aluminum cvds more sought after?

They are probably more rare, yes. They were produced for one model (XXX4) that actually wasn’t that successful (compared to the XX4) vs a part used on 4 models for about 10yrs. But I don’t think dramatically more valuable. Sought out? Highly debatable at best I would say.

So if you were building a shelfer and had both types which ones would you use? Both sets of axles are in pretty good shape
