Schumacher Cat SX3 - Shiny version again

Post by Trass »

Good evening everyone,

Here is the topic dedicated to the restoration of my Cat SX3.

This one was acquired during an exchange with a member of another forum about 1 year ago. For lack of time and especially lack of desire, I had not looked into it.

It will therefore be subject to a reshaping in my own way, with complete deanodization of the aluminum parts and new screws in A2 stainless steel.

When dismantling, I came across a multitude of bad surprises...

So here is his story that started last Sunday ;)

Here it is when it arrives:

Image

Here it is today before its disassembly:

Image
Image

A multitude of shocks and scratches on many aluminum parts (I'm not talking about non-compliant screws here and there):

I'm going to have to clean, sand and untwist, then do some threading again...

Image

A stripped thread and the broken carbon plate:

Image

A jammed screw:

Image

Rear carbon plate broken... he had to pick up this poor chassis:

Image
Image

Broken rear diff flange:

Image

Broken front belt pulley:

Image

File stroke to try to unscrew with a flat screwdriver:

Image
Image

It came, but the other 3 are blocked too, the solution 10 minutes on the wood stove and thermal shock in the freezer... and it comes, phew!!!

Image

During the dismantling of the fixings of rear triangles, the screws are twisted... he really picked up this poor chassis...

Image

Easy solution when you don't have the right wedges... done with those that milk  :censorship:

Image

In short, the list of things to do will be long and it will cost me an arm:

- untwist the front bulks
- deanodize all the aluminum parts
- sand and remove as many marked or damaged aluminum parts as possible
- a new frame
- all carbon parts to be changed
- diff flanges
- driving pins for the rims (half was simple piano wire)
- new belts
- new arms
- new diff crowns
- new belt pulleys
- new diff balls

The "luck" is that the rims and tires are new and that there is a blank body...

To be continued...

More work on this trashy model ...

I started to look into certain parts and it's not easy (it's also what you want when buying models to renovate;)

like removing the bearings from their housings and starting to clean certain parts.

I don't have many photos, but some bearings have rusted in their location and strange thing for those who go in pairs (hub) one in two and rusted and not the other...

Others are rusty and "blocked" on their axles, such as the steering gear axles.

Result of the bath in WD 40 before switching to acetone

Image

And another surprise, the diff nuts were like covered with black paint/marker which came off immediately with the acetone.

Image

removing anodising for the aluminum parts (not yet for the shock absorbers), but just before a little degreasing which was well deserved...

Image

removing anodising again and again shows the difference in quality of the aluminum used by the manufacturers, here we can clearly see certain parts that are almost shiny after rinsing with water.

The removing of anodiasing and the cleaning that preceded allowed me to notice other things rather very unpleasant to see... heavily scratched parts and especially twisted or broken parts.

The eccentrics for example, a part which a priori cannot be broken, but the "schumacher" have a particular shape (the teeth) and in this case, some teeth are broken or twisted. In short, more work ;)

Good evening to you all,

Before polishing, I got down to catching the right front bulkhead which is well marked and a little bent.

I untwisted it with a sharp hammer blow and I gained 0.9mm out of the 1.6mm that there was.

Then, I undertook to remove aluminum with no utility for my taste, execpt to stiffen a little and ESPECIALLY PISS ME OFF TO POLISH IN THE CORNERS !!!!

Here is the twisted piece before the hammer blows

Image

I don't have a photo after for the moment, because I'll probably try an other little blow ... of hammer ;)

So after deanodizing and "deburring", you will notice that there are "scratches" in unlikely places...

I love the shiny idea. I look forward to seeing how it turns out. I should do this with my KF.

Goodnight all,

Before reassembly, I realized that I had forgotten something ;)

a little polishing/stripping was needed :smoke:

Sorry, but I can't do better without actually "attacking" the parts.
