When an ex-CML driver tells you he has a stripped down one off trailing arm 2wd car in his loft....
I was buying some MG motors off a guy around 18months ago and when i met up with him for the exchange he told me that he was at one time a team CML (Central Models) driver, and that he had been given an RC10-based trailing arm prototype car to test and that he still had it, albeit in stripped form, in the loft at his dad's house. Excited by this revelation I vaguely remembered such a car being mentioned in an old Radio Race Car magazine so trawled though my old stash until i located the snippet and immediately got my hopes up that i had found a forgotten gem....
As it turned out, I had
I bought the bits and it is now part-way built back up, but time to share some piccies. It has a machined 'MMS Çoncept Car' gold nose piece and white long front Andy's arms, and a Schumacher-derived rear drivetrain exactly as per the 4wd Concept Car, although this time just using the two rear belts. I guess the initial thinking was that it could easily be converted to a 4wd trailing arm machine using the MMS 4wd RC10 conversion as things progressed.... The diffgear/pulley is a white MMS item and the belts have been upgraded to orange WASP examples. As per the 4wd Concept Car the gear cover is from Parma.
The trailing arms are super thick curved fibreglass affairs with pivot point fittings exactly as per the mag picture; they are the exact same items after all. Super, super cool. To top it off I have added a one-off set of gold Brimod shocks (I have never seen another set in this colour previously).
The ESC in the photo is a Laser, which I have managed to source in the hope of retaining the same electrics as ran at the meeting mentioned above, and I have identified the receiver as a Futaba FP-R102GS, de-cased and heatshrink-wrapped so i have sourced myself one of those also.
I used the Laser ESC to come up with a paint scheme for the bodyshell, and having contacted Jason Varley about the car he suggested that the shell would most likely have been a Penn Jackal, which is what I have gone for here. I literally hate the stock black Schumacher rims so as a personal touch I am going to add a set of Gisom alloys.... i actually quite like the odd front/rear combo as shown here.... but i haven't actually fitted the fronts yet. For a quick mock-up it doesn't look too shabby though, and I do have the matching gold rears if I decide against the rarer red 3-holers.
I went a bit overboard with the Laser ESC purchases but it is the top version which will be going into this build.
I will post up some body-off shots as things nearer completion, but you get the idea.

A Schumacher transmission......
I guess back in the day it would be an improvement over the 6 gear.

You English really liked fiberglass suspension arms didn't ya? Seems like it'd work a bit like a Race Master trailing link set up.
Are you missing a link on your build or is it hidden behind the slider shaft in the pic?

Yes, there are a few links and bits and pieces not yet on the build. Small details now though i think. I have been trying to work that link out from the photo.... i can see the holes where it joins at either end but to me it looks just like all-thread with large ball joints at both ends then perhaps as strengthening tube/sleeve over the all-thread itself. Easy enough to do.
